Anti-crime Information Drive for Call Center Agents Pushed


Bacolod City, Philippines, Oct 2 2017 -- Bacolod City Mayor Evelio Leonardia directed Senior Superintendent Jack Wanky, acting director of Bacolod City Police Office (BCPO), to conduct an anti-crime information and education campaign for call center companies to ensure the safety of their employees.

Leonardia, who led the meeting with local stakeholders of the call center industry and officials of BCPO at the Bacolod Government Center Saturday, said the campaign would be a big help to raise security consciousness among the workers.

"The meeting was called in the light of ensuring our people that as always the security and their protection are our priority," Leonardia said.

Several robbery hold-up incidents were reported last month, some of which victimized call center agents.

Leonardia said the call center industry in Bacolod has an estimated 30,000 employees, and "it’s a very big number that the city would like to take care of."

"The call center industry is a big help to the city’s economy and we would like to assure them that the city wants to create a climate conducive for call centers to grow," the mayor said.

Leonardia noted that when he became mayor in 2004, the call center industry in Bacolod was zero.

"So, I told them I have some kind of attachment to the industry because I saw it being born and being nurtured to become this or to bring impact on the city's economy," he said.

Leonardia assured the call center industry that if they will have some concerns, they will be attended to and will be given high priority.

"They are not alarmed, they are just concerned because security is a concern of everyone," he said.

Leonardia said policemen should also quickly, responsively, effectively, and efficiently respond to the concern of the call center agents because most of them are working during night time.

"This industry must be protected at all times and at all cost because we want to continue growing," he added.

For his part, Wanky admitted there was an increase in robbery incidents in the month of September.

He said they are doing their part to address the problem.

"We are coordinating with the call center industry to ensure the safety of their employees," he added.

Wanky noted that the call center industry also committed to provide gasoline allowance for the Bacolod police.

"We will intensify our visibility patrol and the anti-crime information and education campaign for our call center agents," he said.

Wanky also urged the victims to report the robbery incidents to the nearest police station so they can file charges against the suspects.

"If we are supporting each other, we can solve this problem. We need the cooperation of everybody to file the cases against the suspects," he said.

Wanky said some of the suspects were identified through the rogue gallery of the concerned police station.

He noted that the robbery incidents were perpetrated by the groups of Barredo, Cuadra, and Villarete.

"They are local boys operating in the areas of Bacolod, Talisay, and Silay cities," Wanky said, adding that most of the suspects were former detainees of the Social Development Center in Bacolod.
