Sykes Hiring Several Hundred Workers at Downtown Eugene Call Center


Eugene, OR, USA, Oct, 2017 -- Sykes Enterprises is hiring several hundred workers at its downtown Eugene call center to answer help-line calls from recent hurricane victims.

The hiring surge is coming less than a month after the call center gave notice that it would close the Eugene site, laying off all 181 employees on Oct. 31.

The turn of events happened because a new client emerged at the last minute, keeping the Eugene center open longer than Sykes had expected.

The Florida-based company provides customer contact for global clients in financial services, communications, health care and other industries.

Sykes gave notice under federal labor law that it would close the Eugene center in October 2016. It managed to line up enough clients to continue operating, but then it recently issued a second notice saying the center would close Oct. 31.

Kim Selph, a Sykes spokesperson in Florida, declined to name the new client, but said the Eugene center has a short-term contract to provide resources to people affected by the recent hurricanes in the Southeastern United States.

Sykes is hiring several hundred workers in Eugene to take help-line calls from hurricane victims over the next few months. The work pays $13.22 an hour and is expected to continue until January, the company said. The call center will operate 4 a.m. to 8 p.m., seven days a week.

Sykes hasn’t used its Eugene call center to help a client respond to a natural emergency before, Selph said.

"This is a first for the Eugene location, and we are very excited to be involved in such a worthy cause," she said.

Training of Sykes employees in Eugene is to start soon, Selph said. The center will continue to hire and hold weekly trainings until it is fully staffed, she said.
