Online GST Registration: Technical Glitches Mar Day 1, Helpline Number Busy

New Delhi, India, June, 2017 -- Days ahead of the roll out of India’s indirect tax reform the Goods and Services tax (GST), various traders across the country faced trouble registering themselves on GST portal on the first day on Sunday. Traders complained that the online portal, launched by Union government failed to open till 2 PM on Sunday did not accept the One Time Password (OTP) needed for registration.

Registration with the GSTN is necessary for doing business in the Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime as businesses will have to upload monthly sales data as well as file return forms on this portal.

According to the reports of The Indian Express , City activist Ajay Jagga tried to register some entrants wrote to Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and apprised him about the technical glitches he faced during registration. "The existing traders need to contact the local authorities for migration that has been done in Chandigarh. However, this portal was specifically for the new entrants," Indian Express quoted Jagga as saying.

He also said that the helpline number for GST was not working. "I called up the helpilne number, 01204888999, but the number was busy most of the time. At 11 am, the operator on the number picked up the call and informed that the site is yet to open owing to some problem and will take half an hour,"Jagga further told the daily.

Talking to the daily, president of Chandigarh Beopar Mandal, Anil Vohra said,"The way people are facing problems on the portal, the government will have to offer relaxation to the traders. Since it is a new system altogether, there is a lot of confusion among everybody."

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had earlier reviewed the IT and other preparedness for the rollout of the GST from July 1 and said it will be "a turning point" in the country’s economy. He had directed the officials that maximum attention be paid to cyber-security in IT systems linked to the GST.
