140 Preston Call Centre Staff Moving to Accrington

Oct 14, 2011 -- Call centre jobs are being moved to Accrington as County Hall bosses wield the cost-cutting axe in Preston.

Around 140 staff based at Lancashire County Council’s contact centre in Guildhall Street, in Preston, will join 120 of their colleagues already based at Lancashire House at the Globe Centre.

The county council aims to save around £1million in the next financial year by closing offices in buildings it rents in Preston and selling some of those it owns.

Last month, bosses at US-based outsourcing company Sitel, which handles online holiday bookings, announced plans to move out of the Globe Centre with the loss of 250 jobs.

So LCC’s latest cost-cutting exercise will provide a welcome boost to Hyndburn’s economy.

Leader of the county council, Coun Geoff Driver, said: "We are very clear we have to make better use of our buildings to make savings.

"The council has to save £180million over the next three years – up to 2014. But by changing some of the ways we work, we can make significant savings.

"Reducing the size of the council through efficiencies will help us to protect frontline services.

"The aim is to bring employees together in fewer office buildings, to work more efficiently and make significant savings.

"The savings we make on the office space we use will help us protect jobs and front-line services in the future."

When the Red Rose Hub, LCC’s £20million customer service centre in Preston, closed in 2009, around 100 white collar jobs were moved to the Globe Centre.

In February last year, County Hall chiefs agreed a £5.2million deal to buy part of the site.

The office changes will begin soon and should be complete by next year.

Staff based at Preston’s East Cliff building the Joint Divisional Office and Winckley House will relocate to County Hall and other offices in the city.
