Call Center for the Deaf?

Manila, Philippines, Nov 9, 2011 -- This sounds improbable but a party-list lawmaker has expressed confidence that the estimated three to four million hearing impaired Filipinos may soon be able to place orders for the delivery of their favorite food from local fast food chains by just using the sign language.

Bagong Henerasyon Party-list Rep. Bernadette Herrera-Dy started the ball rolling by helping sponsor the Video Relay Service (Call Center) Training Program for some 30 physically-able persons who will comprise the first batch of agents for the unique call center.

Herrera-Dy is also currently studying the possibility of filing a legislative proposal that would make it mandatory for business establishments, especially fast food chains, and government agencies to put up their own "call centers" for hearing and speech impaired persons or hire sign language interpreters to attend to them.
