TRG Customer Solutions has begun hiring up to 100 employees to occupy its 50,000 square feet of space in the Northfield building starting Oct. 3. By year-end, it plans to have ramped up staffing to 300. Maury County officials and others in economic development see the company’s arrival as good news for a region trying to diversify its employment base beyond the auto industry. "We’ve had such high employment that this will give a lot of opportunities for folks that have been looking for work for a while," said Jan McKeel, executive director of the South Central Tennessee Workforce Alliance, which operates nine career centers. The Northfield building as a whole has 318,000 square feet of space, and it has attracted at least one other tenant, a small operation that assembles solar panel arrays. About 100,000 square feet of the site is being used by the Workforce Alliance and its partners as a training center for professions ranging from paramedics to construction. Other space remains for lease. TRG has 17 operations centers in seven countries that support its customers in telecommunications, banking, finance and other industries. Customer care representatives and technical support agents would make up the bulk of the employees here. On average they will be paid between $26,000 and $30,000 a year. Frank Kelly, TRG’s chief executive, said one reason for locating the call center in Spring Hill was the talent and professionalism of employees in the region. "As we add more customers to the call center there would be additional opportunities in the future," said Julie Casteel, a spokeswoman with TRG in Nashville. At one time, software provider Electronic Data Systems operated a call center for Saturn out of the Northfield building, McKeel said. "We’re definitely making some changes, but it’s an easy retrofit for (TRG)," she said. Unemployment in Maury County has hovered around 12.9 percent to 15 percent in recent months.
