Call Center on the Line in Holland

NOVO 1 operation aims to hire 125 in first year

Holland, MI, Aug 18, 2010 — With an official opening now set for early September, people ready to "share a smile over the phone" from "happy" Holland are already at work in the new NOVO 1 Contact Center in southeast Holland.

About 15 people have been fielding calls since mid-July. NOVO 1 provides call center operations for industries including health care, insurance, utilities, retail and finance. The Texas-based firm projects 125 jobs within the first year at the Holland center that has a capacity for more than 300.

And it has a current job posting, taking applications through Michigan Works.

NOVO 1 marketing materials tout the Holland area’s "dynamic workforce and a great business location," mentioning the survey ranking the area second in the nation in sense of well-being.

"People in Holland are happy, and they have the awards to prove it. In other words, when you want your contact center agents to share a smile over the phone, there is no better place," it notes.

The contact center at 1351 S. Waverly Road is in office space that got $1.4 million in equipment and renovations funded in part by a $1 million Community Development Block Grant. NOVO 1 also got a 100 percent tax break on those improvements worth a projected $115,800 in tax savings over nine years.

Holland Assistant City Manager Greg Robinson said the space was vacant, most recently used as temporary offices by Haworth.

"I think at this point, with the economy we’re in, with the number of people unemployed in the community, particularly in the city of Holland, just being able to provide jobs is key to individuals and families being able to support themselves," he said.

Marlene Brostrom, business services representative for Michigan Works, said the agency helped with hires in July and has just posted another job order through the Michigan Talent Bank website (see www.mich works.org/mtb and search "customer contact specialist").
The posting seeks applicants for future hiring depending on NOVO 1’s clients’ needs, she said, and pay ranges have not been identified and can vary depending on the client.

Brostrom suggested applicants go to Michigan Works service centers in Ottawa and Allegan counties, where they can take a typing test, one of the job requirements.

The project in Holland is the result of the public-private partnership of Glencoe Capital’s Michigan Opportunities Fund, which leverages equity capital for acquisitions and growth investments in companies in Michigan or in businesses that want to expand in Michigan.
The fund is focused on business growth and job creation to improve the state’s economy. It purchased NOVO 1 in 2009.
