August 17, 2010 -- This week, the City of Georgetown will be replacing computers and software used at the 9-1-1 call center for the Georgetown Police and Fire departments. There will be no interruption of 9-1-1 response for emergency calls during the upgrade.
The new system will allow a 9-1-1 call to be transferred to more emergency call centers in the Central Texas region along with other data such as an address or telephone number. The result will be quicker emergency response on transferred calls since callers will not have to repeat information with a new 9-1-1 operator. The use of mobile phones has increased the need for quick transfers of calls among jurisdictions. Georgetown is one of two cities in the 10-county Capital Area Council of Governments region that is implementing the new technology.
The new equipment and software also prepares Georgetown for Next Generation 9-1-1 technology. While not in operation yet, the goal in the future will be to enable citizens to make an emergency "call" using expanded modes of communication such as a text message, photo, video, or automatic crash notification device on a car.
During the computer upgrade on Wednesday, 9-1-1 calls in the City of Georgetown will be forwarded to the Williamson County 9-1-1 call center. Steps have been taken to ensure no interruption of 9-1-1 response during the upgrade, which begins on Wednesday morning and should be completed later that day.
