Officials Considering Giving Fines for Unnecessary 911 Calls
NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC, Feb 2, 2012 -- Officials are considering fining people who call 911 when it's not necessary, saying the fines could help generate more money for the call center.
Emergency Management Director Warren Lee says there's a lot of turnover at the center. Thursday night, he told commissioners that the agency needs more money to pay workers in order to retain them, and added that the center spends a lot of time on calls that are not emergencies.
One commissioner suggested charging for false calls is one way to provide the agency with more funding.
"There are numbers that you can call and still get the same help," said Lee. "Just think twice about it. Before you pick up the phone and dial 911, make sure that what you're reporting is a true emergency."
No decisions were made regarding the issue, but it's something that is being considered.
Commissioners did not discuss how much they would charge. Posted by Veronica Silva Cusi, news correspondent Source: http://www.wect.com
