Reprieve for Bentleigh East Call Centre Workers

13 Apr 11 -- Employees at the troubled Vertex call centre in Bentleigh East have been given more time to find work, according to the Communication Workers Union.

Vertex last month lost a lucrative contract with Telstra, risking up to 200 jobs at the Boundary Rd centre.

Communications Workers Union national president Len Cooper said that initially groups of workers were being "pushed out the door".

"Lately, the process is being slowed down and it seems like the workers will have their three months to find employment before they have to leave," he said.

"And the union is working with Vertex to get as many employees placed in different parts of the company as possible."

The centre employed mostly younger workers on casual contracts.

Mr Cooper said meetings would be held with Vertex to finalise employee entitlements.

"There is less of the immediate panic about it now, but when you’re staring down the barrel of losing your job, it’s not a good feeling," he said.

He said the union was writing to community groups, councils and MPs asking them to join a campaign against sending jobs offshore.

Mr Cooper said issues like those at Vertex highlighted how vulnerable call centre workers were to their jobs being transferred offshore.

"We hope to make companies like Telstra less enthusiastic about sending jobs offshore," he said.

Bentleigh state Liberal MP Elizabeth Miller said any job loss in the Bentleigh area was disappointing and felt in the community.

"We are committed to helping those who have lost their jobs and the Baillieu Government has offered retrenchment support to Vertex through its Back to Work program," she said.
