About 15 of 17 employees of the Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) communication center greeted the new year without a renwered job contract. That, while Cebu City Vice Mayor Joy Augustus Young yesterday described the non-renewal of contracts of casual employees as "inhumane and cruel." City Intelligence Branch (CIB) Chief Romeo Santander said the workers continued to work even with the memorandum order advising them to refrain from operating starting yesterday. "There was no problem. The workers didn’t leave their posts," he said. They were among the 144 casual employees excluded from the list of workers whose contracts have been renewed. One of the employees who requested anonymity told Sun.Star Cebu that in order to protect his job, he will not disappear until someone will replace him. "Trabaho man ni namo. Amo gyud tarungon pagdala bisan pa sa mga problema (This is our job. We’ve to handle it well despite the problems)," he said. He believes the issue has become political since this was the first time it happened in his 24 years of service. "Sila ra gyud ang makahibaw. Gibuhat ra namo among trabaho dinhi para sa katawhan ug among mga pamilya (Only they know. We’re only doing our job here for the people and our family)," he added. The Police Hotline 166 is manned by 12 operators, while the Mobile Alarm Response System (Mars) is manned by five workers under the Peace and Order Program (POP) of the City Government. Only two were assured over the weekend that they can stay put.
