Verizon Closing Call Center in Ahwatukee

Sept 30, 2011 -- Verizon Wireless is cutting 130 jobs as it closes a Phoenix call center that had been set up in relation to the New Jersey-based company’s 2009 merger with Alltel Corp.

The U.S. Justice Department required Verizon to sell off some assets and customers as part of its approval of the company’s Alltel merger. That led to Verizon transitioning some customers to AT&T Inc. and Atlantic Tele-Network Inc.

Verizon spokeswoman Robin Nicol said those transactions resulted in Verizon setting up call centers in Phoenix and Tampa, Fla., to assist customers with the transition.
