Verizon Wireless Laying Off 132 in Closing a Tampa Call Center

July 29, 2011 -- Verizon Wireless is laying off 132 workers as it closes one of its Tampa call centers, the aftermath of the company's 2009 acquisition of Alltel.

Seventy-seven workers at its call center at 5701 E Hillsborough Ave. will be laid off Oct. 1 and 55 layoffs will occur Nov. 5, according to separate mass layoff notices filed with the state this week.

As part of the $6 billion acquisition, Verizon Wireless had to divest some operations. In mid 2009, it agreed to sell certain wireless assets and customer base that Alltel used to serve to two buyers: AT&T and ATNI. The call center in Tampa was part of the deal.

Verizon Wireless spokeswoman Robin Nicol said the buyers did not have a system for billing and serving customers, so Verizon Wireless continued to handle that service under a transition agreement that's now winding down. "These employees (in Tampa) have known this for over a year that this time would come," Nicol said.

Verizon Wireless still has another call center in Tampa, also on Hillsborough Avenue.
