Village to Have New Emergency Call System

Union City, Mich. -- Following a meeting of the village council on Monday night, Manager Jim Campfield will move forward with a new emergency phone system for the public.

The village will contract with AMBS Call Center out of Jackson, also being contracted by the city of Coldwater. Campfield estimated the cost to Union City will be between $150 and $200 a month, based on the volume of calls.

The move was prompted after last Memorial Day weekend, when severe weather descended on the area.

Power was disrupted, and with a tornado event in Coldwater, the 911 system was clogged with calls, hampering their ability to deal with events.

Campfield told trustees that if the system does not work out, the village can back out.

The public will be given the number to call, and it will be on their utility bills.

Campfield said a positive feature will be that the village can track all calls. In the event of an outage, that will help them pinpoint the problem.
