Xerox, in Deal with Cuomo, Will Open Webster Call Center

Jan 26, 2012 -- Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced today that the state has reached a deal with Xerox Corp. to build a new call center in Webster that is estimated to create 500 jobs over two years.

The announcement by the governor comes after Xerox has indicated in recent weeks that it was looking expand its operations at its Webster campus.

"Xerox is a global leader that could have gone anywhere in the world to expand their business, but they chose New York because our state is rapidly becoming the place to be for businesses," Cuomo said.

"By forging successful public-private partnerships like we have with Xerox, we can leverage state resources to generate sustainable economic growth and long-term job creation."

The deal includes $5 million in state Excelsior Jobs Program tax credits and a $1 million grant from the Empire State Development Corp.

The company will invest $4.3 million to renovate a portion of Building 200 on the Webster campus, Cuomo said. It will also purchase information technology systems and equipment to create a 23,000 square foot state-of-the-art call center space.

Last week, the Monroe County Industrial Development Agency approved a local tax abatement package totaling $271,000.

The call center would be part of Xerox subsidiary Affiliated Computer Services, a Texas-based, business process outsourcing company that Xerox bought in 2010.

Initial estimates had put the new jobs at 350 and 400, but Cuomo is expecting 500, he said.

His office said the plan includes 350 jobs in 2012 and an additional 150 jobs by 2013. He said that in addition to the new jobs being created, the company will retain 70 existing employees at the project location.

The renovation work is expected to begin next month, with completion by late 2012.

Xerox expects to begin hiring employees in March, and will include call-center agents and managers, Cuomo said.

Xerox, originally based in Rochester, is one of the region's largest employers, with about 6,800 local workers.
