Would you eat this fish? - Marc Gordon - Blog

Would you eat this fish?

What kind of fish is the Filet O’ Fish made from? You’ll have to read the ad to find out.

There is no scientific description for this. The name basically covers over 20,000 species of fish found in the oceans.

Would you eat a burger made from “land animals”?

I’m not ure this description would resonate with people today, but I suppose in the late 1960’s they weren’t so concerned about what they ate.

I have two takeaways for you on this.

First, people’s attitudes and priorities can change and evolve over time. And in many cases, they can make no logical sense. Demand for organic and non GMO food is growing (healthy), while at the same time popular food trends include international whisky and gourmet donuts (not healthy).

Second, people don’t really care about the things they claim to when it doesn’t align with their desires. Meaning when someone is craving red velvet cake, they will be less likely to worry about the dairy ingredients being organic or the flour coming from sustainable farming.

What does this mean for you? Your customers can say what they want about what’s important to them. But it’s just as important to understand their frame of mind when they are deciding whether to buy from you.

Depending on your products or industry, accommodating current attitudes can be crucial for success. But other times it might not matter at all. After all, people who drive big SUVs can still care about the environment. Maybe just not while cruising down the highway.

Mmmmm, ocean fish.
