According to the earliest sources, the Paleo-Indians visited Southern Arizona for the first time, approximately 12,000 years ago. Excavation near the Santa Cruz River revealed the existence of a village dating from 2,100 BC. Native tribes hunted wild animals and collected edible plants. They discovered efficient methods to grow plants, such as irrigation canals during the Early Agricultural Period, between 1,200 BC and 150 AD.
The years between 600 AD and 1,450 marked the Early Ceramic Period. Archaeological excavations discovered that people dwelling in the Tucson region, commonly known as the Hohokam, were quite inventive in red-brown pottery usage. As proof, several vessels used for cooking and storing food were dug out here.
The earliest locals gave Sentinel Mountain the name “Ts-iuk-shan”, referring to the black base of the mountain.
1692, Francisco Kino, a Spanish Jesuit missionary, inspected the Santa Cruz River valley. And in his religious zeal, he decided to establish the Mission San Xavier del Bac in 1700 in Tucson’s vicinity. Jesuits spelled the place “Tuquison”. Hugo O’Connor, a military governor, soon had a determining appearance. The military man is still considered the founding father of the Old Pueblo. By the way, his spelling of the region was “Toixon”. Soon, the entire history of the dust bowl was about to change for good.
On August 20, 1775, Mr. O’Connor ordered the construction of a fortified military settlement in the region called Presidio San Agustín del Tucsón. The military fort was engaged in communication and trade route protection in the northern Sonora and southern Alta California region.
The Apache Natives had a different opinion on the Spanish extension. They attacked the presidio on several accounts, the most notable being the Second Battle of Tucson, May the 1st, 1782. Though initially, the Apache heavily outnumbered the Spanish, they sustained many casualties. Subsequently, the battle concluded in the retreat of the Indians.
In 1821, once Mexico won its independence from Spain, officials included Tucson in the state of Sonora. A war broke out between Mexicans and Americans between 1846-1848. And Tucson would become the center of attention once again. Philip St. George Cooke leading the Mormon Battalion seized the city. However, he had to proceed westwards to pursue Cooke's Wagon Road to California, an essential route for Americans in the Gold Rush. For a limited time, Tucson found itself under American rule for the first time.
Mexico soon, however, took back control over Tucson and did not yield it till 1854 as a result of the Gadsden Purchase. Then, the United States bought, among others, a 29,670-square-mile region of present-day southern Arizona from Mexico by the Treaty of Mesilla. Quite interestingly, American troops seized formal control over Tucson only two years later, in March 1856.
Since officials saw massive potential in the place, the progress of the little settlement soon started to skyrocket. One year after the American military took control over the region, our beloved city found itself a significant station on the San Antonio-San Diego Mail Line. The Overland Mail Corporation managed the Butterfield Mail in charge of delivering goods, which, unfortunately, was quite frequently exposed to violent Apache attacks. Hence, stations and coaches put an end to the delivery service in August 1861.
Did you know that Tucson has the title of the oldest incorporated city in Arizona? It happened in 1877.
Tucson gained an ill-earned reputation in the second half of the century, because of fierce Indian attacks and stagecoach robberies. For this reason, the US Army had to intervene and founded Fort Lowell, east of Tucson, to safeguard both settlers and travelers from any harm. The wild Tucson also witnessed a short, yet spectacular intervention on behalf of Deputy U.S. Marshal Wyatt Earp. On his journey to Benson, the renowned sheriff killed an infamous local bandit, Franki Stilwell, and his posse in 1882. Nevertheless, the series of dramatic gunfights continued in the upcoming period too.
The territorial legislature founded the University of Arizona on a ranch located between Tucson and Fort Lowell in 1885. Moreover, the arrival and development of the railroad also positively impacted the progress of the region. By 1900, approximately 7,500 people inhabited the area, which almost doubled in just ten years! With a significant influx of newcomers, mostly workers, Tucson was finally on the right track.
Veterans of the Great War seeking respiratory therapy found a haven in the Old Pueblo at the Veterans Hospital. The renowned institution treated former American soldiers exposed to gas on the front with dry air. The fresh air and neighboring highlands offered the adequate cure for tuberculosis too, just before antibiotics. The population grew to around 20,290 souls by 1920. This was an obvious sign for the Tucsonian prosperity.
John Dillinger’s American gangster from the Great Depression captured the city and continued to display its bravery in apprehending outlaws in 1934.
Not only, the police were vigilant, but Tucsonian officials as well, when they implemented growth and Tucson desert preservation laws during and in the aftermath of the Great Depression. The around 35,000 citizens of the city had to endure the harsh consequences of the economic crisis.
During WW2, Tucson proved itself as a patriotic city. After Pearl Harbor, many locals volunteered in the US Army and with the American Red Cross. After the economic crisis of the 30s, a period of prosperity ensued, with metal prices rising as a direct result of war efforts. Therefore, Arizona’s mining industry was also on the rise. Workers were simply pouring into the state. At the same time, Tucson’s air bases, named Davis Monthan Airfield, Marana Airfield, and Ryan Airfield turned into renowned pilot training air harbors. Wartime efforts really moved America’s population around, and Tucson benefited from this. Soon, a paradoxical situation presented itself. In Tucson, commodity shortage became a burning issue even though the job market and, subsequently, the economy were booming. The US administration had to introduce the coupon system for certain foods.
In short, people realized that temporary housing in Tucson was not a viable option. The number of newcomers, civilians, and enterprises kept on growing. Hence, the infrastructure had to keep up with the sudden increase in the population. And veterans returning from the fronts also needed a place to dwell and jobs. We can positively confirm that the influx of people pumped new blood into Tucson’s veins. Old Pueblo was no longer a tiny little town but a major city. Furthermore, it seemed that finally, the disadvantages were eclipsed by the advantages of living in Tucson.
The second half of the 20th century brought about the consolidation of Tucson’s ties with the US Military, the expansion of the University of Arizona in all its scientific departments. The number of the population proves that there was no interruption in the city’s development: by the 1990s it grew to about 405,000.
Tucson prospers due to the ingenuity of its people. Rising from a small western thick town boisterous with gunfights, Tucson made all the right moves towards becoming a bona fide metropolis. And above all, it did not disavow its legacy; moreover, it took advantage of the wild west atmosphere surrounding the city’s legends.

For years, the market has been going up and down but nobody could really predict the next inflection point. So, how can we tell that we are due for another real estate recession?
Every economic recession has a domino effect. And usually, the cause has something to do with money. It must come from the financial sector like a snowball, affecting everything it touches, from big businesses to individuals. Let’s not look further than the last recession. The banking system indulged in hedge fund trading, demanding mortgages of all types, regardless of the credit risk. So, they ended up with a lot of subprime borrowers who soon defaulted on their home loans and the real estate market crashed. With no purchase-power, the economy slowed down and many businesses closed their doors. Unemployment skyrocketed and the market was flooded with so many homes for sale or in foreclosure, that prices plummeted to the ground. Banks were also reluctant to grant loans and some of them were right on the verge of bankruptcy. The game was over. But the US crisis was felt globally.
Unfortunately, as long as politicians will enact laws that regulate the economy and don’t allow the market to balance itself, the threat of a new economic recession won’t give us peace. Regulations and deregulations are both dangerous. And the outcome of most economic measures is unpredictable. So, a new economic crisis might be in the making or might have already begun. On top of these, the media shapes public opinion too and can manipulate us into believing anything. On December 31, 1999, the media fueled the generalized fear that the End of the World had arrived and that nobody would be alive on the first day of the new millennium. Since then, the End of the World has been predicted several times. The same goes for economic recessions. Every now and then, a louder voice scares the hell out of us announcing a new crisis. Should we believe it?

And the truth is that the financial sector is probably the most supervised and politically controlled sector of our economy.
