EVP Eran Farajun Outlines How Cloud-Based Virtual Disaster Recovery

Speeds Recovery and Reduces Cos

TORONTO – December 8, 2011 – Asigra Inc., a leading Cloud Backup™, Recovery and Restore (BURR) software provider since 1986, will present at the DatacenterDynamics (DCD) 2011 Toronto conference on the topic of cloud-based virtual disaster recovery (VDR). Asigra’s executive vice president, Eran Farajun, will recount approaches and key advantages of cloud-based disaster recovery when deployed in an enterprise environment. Interested attendees should go to Hall 2 at the Mariott Eaton Center in Toronto on Monday, December 12, 2011 at 9:55 a.m.

As a growing number of organizations restructure their IT environments to enhance uptime, Virtual Disaster Recovery (VDR) is emerging as a key ingredient for any organization’s business continuity plan. VDR focuses on backing up virtual machines instead of physical servers, which often requires re-installation of the operating system and the use of local-client backup applications to recover applications and data. With VDR, recovery is much quicker since there is no need to re-install the operating system and applications on a physical server. Instead, virtual machines are recovered with these elements intact. VDR advantages include:

  • High-speed recovery which is critical when time is of the essence and a production data center becomes unavailable.
  • Recoverability of virtualized applications to either the same or disparate hardware platforms.
  • The ability to recover data to the location of choice for greater operational flexibility.
  • Many-to-one recovery for greater efficiency. This allows companies to get the most out of fewer recovery servers compared to the production site.

Guidance on cloud-based VDR strategies and techniques will be provided during Farajun’s presentation to help organizations ensure access to critical business applications and data when required.

“Virtual Disaster Recovery can provide significant advantages for organizations virtualizing their IT environments,” said Lauren Whitehouse, Senior Analyst, Enterprise Strategy Group. “As companies transition to a more virtualized state, they are being exposed to new strategies and solutions that allow for greater flexibility and control of data protection processes. VDR is one such approach to recovering virtualized applications and data that helps organizations become more prepared when the situation requires.”

“VDR is an advanced approach to expediting data recovery in the event of system downtime, returning access to important business data quickly and efficiently without the need for costly additional hardware or offsite recovery locations,” said Farajun. “With cloud-based VDR, data recovery is performed without the need to reinstall software applications, patches or services packs to any computing platform.”

STORAGE SWITZERLAND REPORT HIGHLIGHTS GRIDSTORE’S SCALE-OUT NAS AS EXCELLENT ALTERNATIVE FOR GRID STORAGE OVER CLUSTERED STORAGE MODEL

Leading Storage Analyst Firm Endorses Grid Storage Infrastructure as the Best Approach for Modern Data Centers

Mountain View, Calif. – November 16, 2011 – Gridstore™, the leader in scale-out NAS solutions, today announced the findings of a report by analyst firm Storage Switzerland that highlights scale-out NAS as an excellent alternative for grid storage over clustered storage models. In the report, “Scale-out NAS Storage Grid vs. Cluster: Which Storage Infrastructure is Best For the Modern Data Center?”  Storage Switzerland’s lead analyst, George Crump compares grid storage to clustered storage approaches and determines that scale-out storage via a grid design is gaining in popularity for meeting the demands of the dynamic data center.

According to the findings by Storage Switzerland, a clustered, scale-out storage system is built a node at a time. In addition, each node is responsible for volume management, snapshots, replication and cloning and places a burden on each node in the scale-out cluster. To resolve this issue these systems must have multiple processors, multiple cores and multiple network connections to keep up with the amount of work they have to perform behind the scenes. This adds cost and complexity with the likelihood of a node failure which can have a cascading effect on the rest of the infrastructure.

On the flip side, scale-out NAS storage systems with a grid architecture, like those offered by Gridstore, take a different approach to addressing the scalable storage challenge. Storage Switzerland acknowledges that Gridstore’s NAS solution is an excellent alternative to the shortcomings of scale-out cluster-based storage.

“Scale-out storage continues to grow in popularity but many customers, assume that cluster -based, scale-out storage is their only option, simply tolerate its shortcomings,”  said George Crump, lead analyst, Storage Switzerland. “Grid storage solutions like those available from Gridstore are an excellent alternative. By eliminating the cost, complexity and overhead of a cluster, these solutions provide scalable performance and capacity at a more cost effective price point while raising the bar from just high availability systems to completely fault tolerant systems.”

Gridstore uniquely combines virtualization with a grid processing platform to deliver a single pool of storage that simplifies management while increasing performance, scalability and reliability. The virtualized storage pool is built from simple, low cost storage blocks of various capacities. Gridstore provides incremental capacity scaling so customers can start small and incrementally add nodes to grow capacity to any size they need.

“With Gridstore’s scale-out NAS solution, every organization can have a true storage grid designed from the ground up without the complexity and risk of monolithic, clustered storage alternatives,” said Kelly Murphy, CEO, Gridstore. “And, as Storage Switzerland has confirmed in their report, Gridstore brings significant advantages over clustered approaches to deliver higher performance, fault tolerance and 3X less wasted capacity – all at a price point that is changing the dynamics of storage.”

STORAGE SWITZERLAND 90-DAY TEST DRIVE IDENTIFIES GRIDSTORE 2.0 AS THE EASIEST SCALE-OUT NAS SOLUTION THEY’VE TESTED

Hands-On Review Demonstrates that the Gridstore Scale-Out NAS Solution Succeeds in Installation, Expansion and Harnessing Multiple File Servers into a Single Powerful Storage Grid

Mountain View, Calif. – November 2, 2011 – Gridstore™, the leader in scale-out NAS solutions, today announced that its Gridstore 2.0 solution has received top marks in a three-month “test drive” by analyst firm Storage Switzerland as the easiest scale-out NAS implementation they have tested. In the hands-on review, “Storage Switzerland Drives SME Scale Out NAS – Initial Set Up of Gridstore 2.0,” Storage Switzerland’s senior analyst, George Crump, focuses on all aspects of the Gridstore Scale-out NAS out-of-the box experience including installation, expansion, and consolidation of multiple file servers into a single storage grid.

Gridstore’s Scale-out NAS solution has stood up to months of rigorous performance and reliability testing by Storage Switzerland with absolutely no issues or outages. In the past, the analyst firm has tested other NAS systems without proper power shutdown and found that they inexplicably reboot, turn themselves off or just drop their network connection. However, Gridstore excelled at the challenge by continuing to run no matter what torture testing was done to it.

“What makes Gridstore unique is its combination of a grid architecture with virtualization to eliminate the need for clusters,” said Crump. “This allows them to take advantage of parallel processing and I/O which should significantly improve throughput. Having been involved in several scale-out implementations, this is the easiest that I have seen thus far. We had the systems from box to accepting data in less than 30 minutes.”

In the report from Storage Switzerland, they found that Gridstore’s next-generation NAS solution significantly reduces cost and complexity while delivering on the promise of harnessing multiple file servers into a single, powerful storage grid.

“Gridstore’s Scale-out NAS solution eliminates the heavy upfront cost of buying an enterprise NAS platform while still providing organizations, no matter how small or large, enterprise-class performance and fault tolerance of a true scale-out NAS – eliminating single points of failure, complexity and cost of multiple devices,” said Kelly Murphy, CEO, Gridstore. “And, as Storage Switzerland has validated in their test drive evaluation, implementation can be completed in as little as a half an hour with reliability that exceeds other vendors tested.”

Gridstore Scale-out NAS storage solutions offload storage processing onto an unlimited number of Virtual Storage Controllers running in client side machines. This enables very simple low cost storage nodes to be used in parallel while generating exceptional performance, scaling and reliability that goes beyond any product it its class.

“Gridstore’s NAS provides a simple, scale-out file storage solution with surprising performance and an even more surprising price point,” said Crump. “The Gridstore system continues to impress. It has been reliable, performs very well and has been easy to use and expand.”

Core Issues for Companies that Sell Through the Channel - http://bit.ly/oER3tX

If businesses are going to be successful in developing an indirect channel, giving partners the tools they need to successfully sell, service and support their products is critical to success. Partner relationship management (PRM) enables companies to improve both the management and enablement of partner networks. It also improves communication and collaboration with partner members. PRM in its best form will reduce the costs of managing partner networks while, at the same time, improving the partner experience in those networks. It allows companies to scale and manage thousands of partners without having to increase staff. It enables partner success by giving partners what they need, when they need it.

However, there are core challenges common to all companies that sell through two-tier distribution. While there are many, the four below are some of the toughest to overcome.

Scalable and Effective Management of a Partner Network
It is very difficult to recruit, develop and maintain a good relationship with a large partner network. Technology is a must to cost-effectively get your partners the tools necessary to sell, service and support your products. Automation and on demand access to resources are key to scalability and cost-effective management.

Developing a Relationship with End Users
If you sell through the channel, it is very difficult to find out who your customers are. This gets more difficult as products move down the cost and complexity curve (think mainframes vs. mice). However, you must find a way to develop a relationship to effectively up-sell, resell and retain these customers. Moreover, you have to do this in a way that supports and complements the relationship the partner has with the end user. If not, you risk losing partners and many future customers in the process.

Staying Top of Mind with Partners
Partners rarely, if ever, build a business around a single product. How do you find ways to keep your solutions top of mind with your partner network? If you are a large company, you can probably spend your way out of this problem. If you are not, you need to get much more creative. Having effective communication with partners, motivating them with spiffs and providing better sales tools keeps your company and products on their preferred recommendation list.

Preventing Channel Conflict
It is critical when working with partners that you develop processes to prevent or at least minimize channel conflict. Conflict can exist between partners or between different segments of partners like VARs, OEMs and direct marketers. It can also exist where your company has both a partner network and a direct sales team.

Micro Matic Streamlines Backup Processes and Eliminates the High Cost of Tape Using Gridstore Scale-Out NAS

Leading Global Supplier of Draught Beer Equipment Reduces Storage Sprawl and Eliminates the Cost of Physical Tapes with Next-Generation NAS Solution from Gridstore

Mountain View, CA. – October 11, 2011 – Gridstore™, the leader in scale-out NAS solutions, today announced that Micro Matic, a leader in the global delivery of draught beer equipment, has optimized their growing storage infrastructure and reduced storage sprawl by deploying Gridstore’s next-generation NAS solution. With Gridstore’s Scale-out NAS solution Micro Matic now has a completely disk-based backup process which has streamlined the company’s data protection processes while eliminating the high cost and risk associated with tape.

Micro Matic is a major supplier of draught beer equipment in over 120 countries throughout the world. It serves the U.S. market through four strategically located distribution centers in west, central, southeast and northeast locations. These centers provide just-in-time delivery as a daily achievement. The company is committed to continually seek better ways to deliver quality draught beer and excellence in customer service.

Faced with the challenge of managing over 5TB of data sprawled over multiple data centers in California and Florida, Micro Matic needed to optimize its storage operations. Video training files, engineering drawings and user desktop files were rapidly consuming incrementally growing volumes of storage capacity.

“We quickly found ourselves managing over 5TB of data and our backup and restore process from tape placed us at risk,” said Eddie Palmer, system administrator, Micro Matic. “NAS was a practical approach to solving the problem, but traditional NAS would have been too expensive and would have continued to perpetuate our storage sprawl problem. We wanted to be proactive so that we could be prepared for our future growth and wanted to be able to expand as needed without having to overprovision our storage.”
That’s when Micro Matic discovered Gridstore. With the Gridstore Scale-out NAS solution, the beverage equipment company is able to combine the simplicity, convenience and affordability of NAS with the scalability, performance and reliability of enterprise-class storage. As a result, the company can achieve a powerful NAS storage grid that eliminates storage sprawl and multiple single points of failure while benefiting from a next-generation storage offering at half the cost of standalone NAS solutions.

“With Gridstore it was literally ‘set it and forget it,’” said Palmer. “Backups just work and there is no worry about tapes. It works completely with our existing infrastructure, except now we are completely disk-based for our backups which saves us both time and money.”

Micro Matic has seen the following benefits as a result of deploying Gridstore’s Scale-out NAS:

• Eliminated costly physical tape environment to a single disk-based backup operation removing single points of failure across its remote sites

• Powerful NAS storage grid that leverages parallel I/O to eliminate performance bottlenecks and scales to meet the growing demands of backup processes from multiple server environments.

• NonStop reliability - protection that goes beyond RAID protection of 1 or 2 disks. Micro Matic’s backup target can suffer multiple node failures without impacting backup processes or the availability of data.  Gridstore makes it easy to recover from failed hardware by simply attaching a new storage node to the network.

• Incremental capacity that can be added on a Pay-as-you-Grow basis eliminates the need to overprovision storage resources and ensures backups never fail due to capacity limitations

“Gridstore’s Scale-out NAS is an ideal fit for organizations like Micro Matic that need to unify their distributed backup operations to eliminate risk and ensure a comprehensive data protection and business continuity process that allows them to simply set it and forget it,” said Kelly Murphy, CEO, Gridstore. “Our customers can take advantage of a simple building block approach to storage that offers significantly better performance, reliability and scaling. It’s the ideal solution for any company looking to achieve greater storage flexibility at the industry’s most aggressive price points.”

Most organizations today rely on bare-metal-restore (BMR) capability to restore from an existing hardware environment to a different configuration. BMR is performed without reinstalling software applications, patches, services packs, etc. The reality is that the typical procurement times within most organizations range from 4-to-12 weeks. In case of a disaster, most organizations may not have the new hardware immediately available to restore data they backed up offsite, extending recovery time. This is the scenario that is ideal for cloud-based VDR.

Virtual Disaster Recovery is a new approach for expediting data recovery in the event of system downtime, returning access to important business data quickly and efficiently without the need for costly additional hardware or offsite recovery locations. VDR takes disaster recovery (DR) to the next level, and when delivered by a professional service provider, can be deployed as a cloud-based service. With cloud-based VDR, the latest virtual server snapshot is recalled by the service provider and the image that suffered the data loss is then reloaded without having to rebuild the entire virtual machine. Recovering lost information is a much shorter procedure than alternative methods because restoration is incremental. The advantages of VDR over traditional data recovery models include rapid recovery and much lower cost.

“Virtual Disaster Recovery (VDR) has been proven in thousands customer environments of every size and across every vertical,” said Ashar Baig, Senior Director, Strategic Alliances & Business Development, Asigra. “A company’s ability to recover servers to and from the cloud, or any location required by the business, provides an inherent advantage in terms of speed and cost while preserving data integrity.”

Gridstore Discusses Storage In The Virtualized World During Interface 2011

Show Attendees See Benefits of Gridstore’s Next-Generation Scale-out NAS Solution To Reduce Risk, Complexity and Cost of Sprawling NAS Islands

Mountain View, CA – Gridstore™, the leader in scale-out NAS solutions for the SMB market, today announced that it will lead a discussion titled, “21st Century Storage – For the Next Generation Data Center,” during Interface 2011 in Phoenix, AZ, September 22, at 11:10 a.m. The session will highlight why traditional storage technologies are obsolete in the virtualized data center, due to high cost, reduced performance and increased complexity. While current server virtualization allows you to do more with less, Gridstore’s virtual storage grid technology allows you to harness the resources of your computer infrastructure into the most powerful platform available.

The Gridstore Scale-out NAS solution combines the simplicity, convenience and affordability of traditional NAS with the scalability, performance and reliability of enterprise storage at half the cost of standalone solutions. The Gridstore next-generation storage management platform consolidates distributed NAS islands into a powerful, enterprise-class storage grid. As a result, the Gridstore Scale-out NAS solution is an ideal offering for small and medium sized businesses (SMBs) and distributed enterprises because it eliminates storage sprawl and combines the ease of NAS with the scalability and performance of enterprise-class storage.

Gridstore’s Scale-out NAS solution uniquely combines an innovative grid architecture with virtualization to build a cost-effective, file-based storage solution that enables organizations to create efficient storage pools that centralize sharing and management of massive amounts of NAS files. The benefits of this approach include unlimited storage capacity, unlimited bandwidth, unlimited processing capability and reliability beyond the limits of enterprise storage RAID.

“I selected Gridstore because I can get a scalable and reliable scale-out NAS system that provides me with enterprise features with minimal capital investment, and I don’t have to plan or pay for my future storage requirements today,” said Steve Garcia, systems and security administrator, Wenatchee Valley College. “We are implementing the [Gridstore Scale-out NAS solution] across our different departments and campuses; the system's combination of scalability and economies of scale are a very compelling value proposition for anyone who wants an on-demand storage solution that lets you add capacity on the fly with no performance or management headaches.”

The Gridstore storage platform is designed to eliminate the risk, cost and complexity of traditional silo-based storage and gives SMBs a “Pay as you Grow” pricing model that allows organizations to add storage as needed to eliminate the high cost of over provisioning and managing storage resources - while minimizing the reliability and risk of multiple NAS storage silos.

“Organizations are under the constant strain to do more with less in spite the fact that their storage demands continue to grow exponentially,” said Kelly Murphy, CEO, Gridstore. “Gridstore addresses the problem for organizations by providing a scale-out NAS solution that delivers the simplicity and reliability they require to transparently grow and manage their virtualized storage infrastructure – at a price tag they can afford.”

Queplix Offers Best Practices for Data Integration by Author: Michael Zuckerman, CMO, Queplix

The explosion in information technologytools and capability has accelerated. Our information technology environment is moving at absolute light-speed. Yet, the back of data integration is broken. 90% of customers are using 20-year old ETL technology designed to move batch files into the data warehouse at 1:00 am. It is a manual process. Worst of all, is that some vendors have even put this 20-year old technology in their newly minted 1-year old cloud. Who wants 20-year old technology in a 1-year old cloud?

To add insult to injury, data quality is … “another product.” I humbly submit that without resolving data quality issues and providing for their ongoing maintenance, you cannot integrate even two applications, load your data warehouse, consider a future Virtual MDM deployment.

The cause of this is simple. Look at the revenue mix for the two major vendors that control the market for large enterprise. Their business is about professional services – not software tools. They are in business to sell you, their customer, as much professional services at the highest rates you can imagine. Legacy ETL technology is a bonanza to a company that sells your company services by the hour.

Even worse, they don’t offer you the right mix of services and technology. The integration was done to specification but it doesn’t seem to work. I guess we’ll just have to sell you additional consulting to do the data quality clean-up.

The five best practices in data integration break this model. Queplix turns the model upside down. By using advanced data virtualization, and pushing back at the legacy monopoly attached to your wallet, you can reduce your costs and speed your time to implementation.
