3 Effective Ways to Address Employment Gaps in an Interview - CoWorx Staffing - ContactCenterWorld.com Blog
Employment gaps are not new, but over the last few years they have been under more scrutiny than ever before. Employable job seekers are experiencing higher rates of unemployment through no fault of their own. Layoffs and the fundamental shift in employment needs are affecting even the most qualified of candidates. Yet, hiring managers still avoid resumes with significant employment gaps. How can you change their minds in an interview? Here are 3 tips that can help right now.
Create a Consistent Answer
When you’re asked what you were doing while not employed never answer with, “Looking for a job.” Instead, explain what you were doing during that time to improve your skills or expand your knowledge. It may have been volunteering, freelancing, writing a book, taking care of family, going to school, or even traveling. Regardless of your answer, make it compelling.
Never be Negative
Being out of work can feel like a weight on your shoulders, but don’t dwell on the negativity when you’re speaking to a potential employer. Not all reasons are negative so focus on the positive instead. If you found yourself laid off or fired from your last job, use the experience to explain how you’ve grown as a person rather than complaining about your boss or coworkers. Talk about the other interests you’ve pursued, your accomplishments, and your reason for wanting to work with their company now.
Of course, neither of these techniques will work if you’re not willing to be 100% honest with your answer. Lying about your experience while you were away from work will come back to haunt you quickly. A reference will quickly dispel anything you had to say. But, there are ways to make your situation positive even by being honest. For example, if you were fired from you last job explain that it wasn’t the right fit for either you or the employer but you’ve learned a lot about how you work and what kind of environment would be better for you. Be confident and have integrity, they go a long way.
