Internships are a rite of passage for many college students looking for experience in their chosen career.
Companies love interns because they can offer updated experience at little to no cost. But should you pay your interns? And, if so, how much? There are a lot of things to keep in mind when considering your internship program. Let’s take a closer look at some of the ways you and your interns can be successful with the right pay.
While many interns are unpaid, there is risk to offering an unpaid internship program. Everyone, no matter what we tell ourselves, are motivated by money. And if a student has access to a salary they are far more likely to be productive in their jobs. By offering a small hourly or basic salary to someone who comes into your office for the summer or other time of year you are tell them that you value their contribution at any level.
Higher Quality Work
For this very reason, you will get much better work from someone who feels that they are contributing to the company, not just there to do odd jobs that no one else wants to do. By paying them you are treating them like junior members of your actual team. They will reward your company with much better quality work during the time they are there.
Better Candidates to Choose From
You will also find yourself with a better pool of candidates than companies who open up their internships to anyone for no money. People will apply to your organization for the chance to be a part of your team for this period of time. You will find that rather than getting anyone and everyone’s resume for the experience, qualified applicants with good educational background will be more interested in working with you.
Lastly, when you pay your interns you also find that you will discover talent for your future. Good quality, paid interns can become people you source for jobs once they’ve graduated from their professional programs. It can be a great investment in the future of your business.
