Building An Effective Employee Engagement Program

Back in the day, HR people used to talk about “employee morale.” Later on, they came up with a new term: EMPLOYEE ENGAGEMENT. Nowadays, the topic is bigger than ever. If you talk with business leaders, the conversations are consistently about retention issues, and businesses all over the world are trying to build an inclusive, passionate, multi-generational team.

Clearly, executives and managers are very concerned about the waste of time, effort and resources in their organizations due to lack of employee engagement. The reason is simple: If people are not engaged, how can these same leaders attain those business objectives that are critical to improving organizational performance?

So what do we mean by employee engagement? How much does a lack of engagement cost an organization? What steps can leaders take to make employees want to give it their best?

Defining Employee Engagement

An engaged employee is a person who is fully involved in, and enthusiastic about, his or her work. Engaged employees care about the future of the company and are willing to invest the extra effort to see that the organization succeeds.

Perhaps a more interesting question to executives is: “Is there a strong relationship between high scores on employee engagement indices and organizational performance?” It seems obvious that engaged employees are more productive than their disengaged counterparts.

Consider some of the results of a recent Global Workforce Survey by Towers Perrin which cited 84% of highly engaged employees believe they can positively impact the quality of their organization’s products, compared with only 31% of the disengaged. 68% of highly engaged employees also believe they can positively impact costs in their job, compared with just 19% of the disengaged.

Given these data, it’s not difficult to understand that companies that do a better job of engaging their employees do outperform their competition.

The Rules of Engagement

Leaders can't demand more engagement—that's not how it works. So what should leaders do to increase the level of engagement among employees? We at TeleDevelopment Services offer several avenues for action:

1. Connect With Your Employees

While initiatives such as profit sharing and implementing work–life balance initiatives are important, if employees’ relationship with their managers is fractured, then no amount of perks will persuade employees to perform at top levels. Engagement is a direct reflection of how employees feel about their relationship with the boss.

2. Offer Career Advancement Opportunities

Most people want to do new things in their job. Good leaders challenge employees; but at the same time, they must instill the confidence that the challenges can be met. Not giving people the knowledge and tools to be successful is unethical and de-motivating; it is also likely to lead to stress, frustration, and, ultimately, lack of engagement.

3. Communicate a Clear Vision

Employees want to understand the vision that senior management has for the organization, and the goals that department heads have for the team. Employees need to understand what the organization’s goals are, why they are important, and how the goals can best be attained.

4. Celebrate Their Achievements

It's common knowledge that employees feel they receive immediate feedback when their performance is poor, while praise and recognition for strong performance is much less common. Exceptional leaders give recognition, and they do so a lot.

5. Collaborate With Your Employees

Studies show that when employees work in teams and have the trust and cooperation of their team members, they outperform individuals and teams which lack good relationships. Great leaders are team builders; they create an environment that fosters trust and collaboration.

6. Most of All, Be Credible

Now more than ever, people want to be proud of their jobs, their performance, and their organization. Leaders should always strive to maintain a company’s reputation and demonstrate high ethical standards.

Make Engagement About The Employee

High-engagement companies understand that employees are the essence of products and services. They develop, deliver, and support what your customers experience every day.

If your employees are hampered on every side by pointless bureaucratic process, rules, fear, hierarchy and stupid management decisions, they can’t relax into their jobs. If your employees love their work and the environment you have created, they will treat customers better, innovate, and continuously improve your business.

TeleDevelopment Services has a proud record of supporting clients in building sustainable talent strategies, driving engagement and ensuring employees remain competitive through customized compensation and benefits benchmarking studies, competitor analysis, best in class HR policies and procedures, and strategic planning.

The Advantages of Outsourcing to the Philippines

Outsourcing has been around from more than two decades, and although they were a little late to the party, the Philippines has shown phenomenal growth in the industry.

The Southeast Asian country with a population of more than 100 million has become one of the top Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) destinations in the world, owing to the combination of its highly qualified and cost-competitive workforce, plus strong government support for investment. In 2015, the industry employed over 1 million Filipinos, with projections that it can generate up to $55 billion by 2020 or roughly 11% of the country’s GDP, according to World Bank estimates.

Roadmap to the Future

In terms of the Philippine IT-BPO Roadmap, projections are that the industry will grow to employ 1.5 million workers and generate $25 billion in annual revenue this year. While the Philippines is now the world leader in voice-based business services (call centers), there are approximately 25 different sectors represented in its IT and shared services sector, and increasingly these sectors represent knowledge-based, non-voice services. More than one-third of the industry is engaged in delivering complex services.

In Defense of the BPO Industry

Commenting on the US Senate’s rejection of an anti-outsourcing bill, Benedict Hernandez, then President of the IT & Business Processing Association of the Philippines (BPAP), said recently: “Outsourcing business services to the Philippines helps make American companies more competitive and profitable. Profitable companies hire more workers, both here and in the United States.” The IBPAP is an umbrella organization for the IT-BPO industry in the Philippines and acts as an advocacy group for the country’s outsourcing and offshoring sector. It seeks to promote competitive advantages and growth potential in existing and new areas of Business Process Management (BPM).

All-Out Government Support

In addition to supporting the BPO industry directly, the Philippine government is building the country brand to promote investment through increased visibility. In 2015, this initiative received a great boost when Manila hosted the year-long Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit which concluded with the APEC Economic Leaders Meeting. In attendance were top world leaders including Chinese President Xi Jinping, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and U.S. President Barack Obama. The event was a unique opportunity for the Philippines to showcase its public-private partnerships, its tourism industry, Filipino arts and culture, and its world-class services.

Investment Incentives

Two main government enticement schemes are the incentives granted by the Board of Investments (BOI) and incentives under the Philippine Export Zones Authority (PEZA). BOI incentives include an income tax holiday for a period of six years for pioneer enterprises and four years for non-pioneer enterprises; the employment of foreign nationals in a supervisory, technical or advisory position for a period of five years; a deduction from taxable income of 50% of labor expenses; and unrestricted use of consigned equipment.

PEZA incentives include the option to pay a special 5% tax on gross income earned in lieu of all national and local taxes; exemption from payment of import duties and taxes on imported machinery, equipment and raw materials; a deduction equivalent to 50% of training expenses; permanent resident status for foreign investors with initial investment of US$150 000 or more; and employment of nonresidents required in the operation of IT enterprises.

Together with strategies being implemented by the Department of Education of the Philippines to improve education and training and produce more graduates for the labor market, these aggressive government incentives are strengthening the Philippines’ already healthy position as a value destination for investors.

Top 5 Tips To Effective Outsourcing

Virgin Group founder Richard Branson, despite his vaunted business acumen and flowing gold locks, couldn’t do it all by himself, so it’s safe to assume you can’t either: YOU CANNOT BUILD A COMPANY ON YOUR OWN.

That means most entrepreneurs will eventually turn to outsourcing, which, as we all know, can be a dicey proposition. Startup owners are particularly touchy, and rightly so, about protecting their intellectual property even as they rely on others to build their product

That’s why we’re presenting you a simple five-step process for outsourcing that will not only save you money, but might also help preserve your sanity.

1. Know Thyself

The first step is to define your product, and, by implication, the business you’re in.

2. Break It Down

Break down your product into its parts, and figure out which company should make each one. Breaking up production ensures that no single vendor knows everything about your product.

3. In & Out

Decide what stays in-house, and what you can outsource. PROTIP: if it involves your core competencies, it should stay in-house. Everything else can be outsourced.

4. Pick A Partner

This means building out your network, and just as importantly, using it. There are certain vendors that are well-known and used by a wide variety of startups, including TeleDevelopment Services, which can handle recruitment, accounting, human resources support, payroll administration, and a whole lot more.

5. Sow What You Reap

Prepare a scope of work (SOW) document which outlines what you expect from your new partner(s): job specifications, timelines, milestones, deliverables, meeting schedules, and payment terms.

Some entrepreneurs want to skip these steps and get straight to work. Not a good idea. If you can’t get through this process, that’s a big warning sign for your company. Once the work’s done, sit down with your staff and your vendors—talk about what worked, what didn’t, and what you can improve upon next time.

If you’re interested in outsourcing work to the Philippines, or starting up an operation there, or would just like to know more about everything we do at TeleDevelopment Services, we would be delighted to hear from you.
