What It Is Like To Work At Telnyx

Telnyx is a complex machine with a simple purpose: connect people. We are an intelligent telephony engine, the beating heart of the Telnyx service that routes data along the pathways of our global, private network. We are drop-in APIs for hooking applications into our products, and an administrator portal that puts unprecedented control of configuring and orchestrating the Telnyx service into our customers’ hands.

We’re also an organization of industry experts and engineers focused on solving problems and building solutions. We’re a concierge customer success team and a 24/7 support team. We’re a communications partner, focused on agile and endless innovation, not a telecom slogged in antiquated processes and anti-competitive regulation. We keep the conversation going: the always-on, omni-channel, enriched conversation that the modern world demands.

Communications are coming untethered from devices, and more and more, they’re migrating into our everyday platforms: our social media, our work applications and our collaboration tools. But, that move started before there was infrastructure to support it—the modern internet will never offer the speed and consistency that real-time communications require. So, we built a network that does and a cloud platform tuned for real-time communications at every layer. Telnyx is the connective matrix, a worldwide nervous system, a high-speed rail tunneling through the information superhighway. We’re the foundation for calls, texts and messaging today, for the internet of things, augmented reality and “communitainment” tomorrow, and for whatever enterprising imaginations can dream up after that.

We’re Telnyx. We’re the future of communications.

At Telnyx, we're looking for people with passion, grit, and integrity. You're encouraged to apply even if your experience doesn't precisely match the job description. Your skills and passion will stand out—and set you apart—especially if your career has taken some extraordinary twists and turns. At Telnyx, we welcome diverse perspectives and people who think rigorously and aren't afraid to challenge assumptions. Join us!

Combining natural language processing and artificial intelligence with world-class cloud computing, the things you’ll create at Dialpad will shape the future of work—enabling companies to work from anywhere and making business communication more human.

The developer platform team builds frameworks that external developers to use to build integrations and plug-ins into Dialpad. The developer platform is key for scaling out Dialpad’s integrations offerings, and has seen rapid adoption from third party developers since its inception. Engineers on this team build frontend plug-in frameworks, client libraries, and backend public APIs and event frameworks. We work closely with a technical product manager who connects with developers to identify their workflows and needs.

What you will achieve

In your first two months:

  • Meet your manager and onboarding buddy who will support you in getting started
  • Set up your development environment
  • Get to know a highly communicative and collaborative engineering team
  • Complete the engineering onboarding program (including training videos and documentation)
  • Work on starter projects to get comfortable working with the Dialpad codebase. Starter projects are done across all teams, and will help ramp you up on all aspects including: frontend, backend, and architecture.

In your first six months:

  • You’ll work on impactful and educational starter projects within the developer platform team. For example: exposing a JS API that allows plug-ins to change a user’s presence status.
  • You’ll receive mentorship and code reviews from your peers in the developer platform team. Your peers love to work together, talk through projects, and help each other overcome roadblocks.

After six months:

  • You’ll have a deeper understanding of the developer platform codebase and will be able to work on more complex projects.
  • You’ll build platform features based on the team’s quarterly goals. We use usage data and communicate directly with developers to identify what we need to build to support their workflows.
  • You’ll own the features that you build throughout the development cycle: from design, implementation, testing, to monitoring in production.

One year and beyond:

  • The developer platform team is a very engineering driven team, and as a developer you’ll be able to look at our product from the user’s perspective and propose enhancements.
  • You’ll learn how to do code reviews so you can share your knowledge with peers in the future.
  • Mentor new hires to help the team grow.

Who you are

You’re an experienced engineer who would be excited to build and enhance the front-end aspects of our developer platform. You would love to build a generic, re-usable, and robust platform that developers can use to plug in to Dialpad.

Our tech stack

  • VueJS (single page application)
  • Electron

The team

Every engineer on our global Engineering team is given the opportunity to take ownership of a large portion of the product where they’re able to see immediate results. Combining natural language processing and artificial intelligence with world-class cloud computing, the things you’ll create at Dialpad will shape the future of work—enabling companies to work from anywhere and making business communication more human. The role will be within Dialpad’s Security Function with an embedded model into the engineering team. The role will report into the Information Security and Compliance Manager.

What you will achieve

In your first 30 days:

  • You’ll build an understanding of Dialpad’s cloud product and platform infrastructure including Google Cloud, AWS, and other systems that support our products/integrations.
  • You’ll become closely engaged in the security controls that are implemented in our cloud infrastructures including access control, logging, configuration management, secure development lifecycles.
  • You’ll work with our Sr. Security Engineer, Security and Compliance Manager, and Engineering tech leads to understand the risks that need to be addressed in our systems and the project plans associated with the mitigation.
  • By the end of your first month, you’ll have a thorough understanding of our product systems and be ready to embark on implementing your first projects to enable security controls.

In your first 60 days:

  • You’ll work on a couple of projects to enable automation of security controls in GCP and AWS. This will include building of the security controls, implementing in test and production environments, and documenting the management of the controls for engineering and security.
  • You’ll enable and consolidate logging from infrastructure components into a centralized service. From the logging intake you will build alerts associated with anomalies that need to be investigated by the engineering team.
  • You will gain a more thorough understanding of our security vulnerability detection and remediation pipeline.

By 90 days:

  • You will complete projects that will help us reach our security compliance objectives.
  • You’ll be a part of our security team’s on-call rotation to help with alerts, incidents and vulnerability remediation.
  • You will be a part of strategic initiatives associated with security risk management
  • You will be regularly investigating our environment to find vulnerabilities and
  • You’ll be maintaining the security controls to help meet our compliance objectives associated with SOC2, ISO, and Cloud Security Alliance compliance frameworks.

Who you are

A security enthusiast with 2 - 4 years of experience who is excited to dive deep into systems to find gaps and build scalable security solutions to consistently remediate the root cause of those gaps. You have experience in scripting APIs and configuring solutions that can allow for secure controls to be implemented across cloud based infrastructures such as Google Cloud and Amazon Web Services. You are developer focused and build security to be part of the initial solution in a preventive and detective manner, rather than a reactive manner. You love to automate security solutions and are able to work with developers across different product areas to provide a paved path they can follow to build secure code and infrastructure.  You are intimately familiar with the security solutions that are provided by the cloud infrastructure providers that can help Dialpad gain visibility and control into our cloud infrastructure environments. (Google Cloud Security Command Center, Stack driver, AWS Cloud Watch, Datadog, etc.)

When you come across areas that you are not familiar with you are able to dive into documentation, learn from team members across different parts of the organization, and find external sources to build solutions that work with Dialpad’s software development life cycle. You have worked with global teams and are familiar with asynchronous working solutions such as Zendesk, JIRA, Github, etc.

About The Team

The Natural Language Processing team in the Voice Intelligence division of Dialpad analyzes transcripts of customer conversations to come up with new linguistic insights. We build natural language understanding modules to format the transcripts to improve readability and identify key moments that occur in the conversation, including sentiment analysis, named entity recognition, information extraction, and intent detection. We build our own state-of-the-art solutions using a mixture of in-house and open source technologies ranging from knowledge-engineered solutions to the very latest deep learning transformer models, while carefully considering the ethical impact of our research.

We’re an eclectic group of scientists, with backgrounds in diverse fields including linguistics, computational linguistics, machine learning, computer science, material science, biology, and quantum physics. And we work in a mix of tools and technologies -- Python and Pytorch mostly, but some Keras, Tensorflow, and miscellaneous programming languages to keep things varied.

What you will achieve

In your first 30 days:

  • You’ll work closely with your manager and an onboarding buddy to learn our technical infrastructure and our linguistic domain
  • Working with your buddy, you’ll dig into our data and begin to make some modifications to code for extracting a linguistic “moment”. This will get you familiar with how we develop and deploy our features. Recent projects that new hires took on during their first 30 days include flagging personally identifiable information in transcripts, formatting and extracting postal codes, and experimenting with data augmentation methods to improve a sequence labeling model
  • You’ll attend the weekly learning seminars that our team and the speech recognition team runs to discuss the latest research on our team, papers hot off arXiv, or interesting conferences

In your first 60 days:

  • You’ll take on a task in collaboration with another colleague. You’ll do the data exploration, maybe build a prototype, and write up an experiment plan
  • You’ll meet with our product managers to discuss how these ideas fit with the overall product, and brainstorm with UI designers about what the feature might look like in the product
  • You’ll be invited to give an internal presentation to the other scientists about some area that interests you at one of the learning sessions
  • You’ll spend a lot of time iterating on experiments. We try to make sure scientists and software developers have lots of meeting-free time to focus on the fun bits of the job

In your first 90 days:

  • You’ll see your first major project move through the stages of internal deployment then into production. There’s usually a period of tuning and refining when we see how things operate at scale
  • You’ll participate in the team’s brainstorming sessions as we plan for the quarter and year ahead
  • You might attend a conference on machine learning or computational linguistics

Who you are

We’re looking for people with a Master’s or PhD degree in linguistics, computational linguistics, computer science, machine learning or related fields and a real passion for language. Over the coming years we’ll be extending to Spanish, French, Japanese and other languages, as well as other varieties of English, so if you have some proficiency in other languages be sure to mention it!

Most of the team is based in Vancouver, BC or Kitchener, ON but we’re open to remote work from within Canada or the USA.
