Citizens Advice Launches Helpline for Ukrainians Granted Visas to Live in Craven

North Yorkshire, UK, July, 2022 - A helpline has been set up for the more than 100 Ukrainians so far granted visas to live in Craven and their around 80 sponsors.

Citizens Advice says figures released on July 12 show that 103 visas have been approved to Ukrainian citizens and there are currently 77 sponsor locations across Craven.

In response, the North Yorkshire branch of the charity, whose Craven office is at Belle Vue Square, Skipton, has set up a helpline to offer support to Ukrainians under the 'Homes for Ukraine' government scheme.

The charity, which has received funding from North Yorkshire County Council for the helpline, says it can support Ukrainians, family hosts and their sponsors.

It can offer advice on access to all current welfare benefits such as disability living allowance for children, universal credit and personal independence payment. It can also offer support with applications, form filling and appeals.

The dedicated helpline can also support Ukrainians with advice on the biometric residency permit process and signposting to local Ukrainian support groups across the county.

The helpline has access to Ukrainian and Russian interpreters and is open Monday to Friday.

Carol Shreeve, chief executive officer of the charity which recently merged branch offices together, said: "We are delighted after funding from the county council to be able to deliver vital support to Ukrainians, family hosts and sponsors across North Yorkshire.

"Our dedicated advisers have already supported several families, many who have been traumatised by the terrible conflict in Ukraine. "

Figures show that 995 visas have been issued to Ukrainians across the whole of North Yorkshire with 727 sponsor locations.

Ms Shreeve added: " We understand that navigating support can be difficult for Ukrainian families and their hosts and the process can be quite daunting especially when it comes to welfare benefits and the current rising costs of living crisis.

"We urge anyone who needs our support, whatever the issue, to contact our dedicated helpline as soon as possible.

"Our knowledgeable advisers will always do their utmost best to help Ukrainian citizens, family hosts and their sponsors find a way forward."

The helpline is open Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 01757 600 365.

A voicemail can be left out of hours and an adviser will aim to get back to people within one working day.

Craven District Council recently agreed to set in motion plans for Craven to become a 'district of sanctuary'.
