Suicide Helplines have been Busier During the Pandemic, Says Sadag

Johannesburg, South Africa, Sept 21, 2021 -- Mental health-related organisations in South Africa have noted a sharp increase in people requiring assistance through their suicide call centres during the pandemic.

The South African Depression and Anxiety Group (Sadag) stated that they have received over 74 000 calls to their suicide helpline since January this year. Lifeline Durban has also noted an increase in similar calls, as well suicidal ideations during their online counselling sessions.

Sadag operations director, Cassey Chambers, cites a combination of issues that contribute to suicidal tendencies. Sadag has noted through its helpline, that leading contributors to suicide is undiagnosed or untreated depression.
