Disaster Distress Helpline Providing 24/7 Counseling to Those in Need

Charleston, SC, USA, Sept, 2019 -- Those in need of immediate counseling can find comfort by calling the Disaster Distress Helpline.

The helpline is able to assist anyone seeking help to cope with any mental or emotional effects before and after a severe storm.

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, "Preparing for natural disasters such as those that could be brought by Hurricane Dorian approaching Georgia and South Carolina can be overwhelming and can seriously affect emotional health. It is common to experience anxiety and depression-like symptoms tied to worrying about the chance of damage or injury."

The helpline, which is sponsored by Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services (SAMHSA), is a free line that is open 24/7. It is a multilingual and confidential service.

"People who have been through a traumatic event can experience anxiety, worry or insomnia," said Dr. Elinore F. McCance-Katz, the Assistant Secretary for Mental Health and Substance Use and the head of SAMHSA. "People seeking emotional help in the aftermath of a disaster can now call 1-800-985-5990 or can text TalkWithUs to 66746 and begin the process of recovery."
