Tempe, AZ, USA, Jan, 2020 -- CarMax is ramping up hiring at its newly opened call center in Tempe. The facility eventually will be home to 500 workers, and company officials expect the facility to be at full capacity in a few months.

The company has hired more than half of the staff and hopes to quickly recruit more than 200 other associates, said Dora Cazares, regional management assistant, at an official ceremony on Jan. 14 attended by local dignitaries. The call center opened in December and expects to have 100 employees more than officials expected when the decision to open was announced last September.

"We’re looking for people who are great at customer service and have a mindset to help others," said Cazares, who works out of the company's Tolleson used-car dealership.

Richmond, Virginia-based CarMax (NYSE: KMX) is recruiting bilingual candidates, and employees can make up to $22 an hour.

The employees in the facility, at 1515 W. 14th St. in Tempe, will support customers over the phone all over the country with shopping for used cars or financing vehicles.

The Fortune 500 company chose Tempe to build the call center because "there is a rich culture here… it’s a no-brainer for us. It makes sense to us to know that we have that pipeline," said Aswin Kopparthi, senior manager at CarMax's Phoenix Customer Experience Center (CEC).

Chris Camacho, president and CEO of the Greater Phoenix Economic Council, said the ability for companies to scale to this size is what sets Tempe apart from other cities. Tempe is able to attract businesses and keep them in the area because of a strong labor pool, added Tempe Mayor Mark Mitchell.

Camacho attributes the strong labor pool available in Tempe to the Maricopa Community Colleges, Arizona State University, Grand Canyon University and other educational programs for the strong labor pool available in Tempe.

The facility was strategically placed in Tempe because of its location related to key markets in the country, said Richard Buscher, CarMax CEC regional vice president.
