New JB WhatsApp Helpline for Those in Distress
Johor Baru, Malaysia, Oct 4, 2018 -- Befrienders Johor Baru plans to start a WhatsApp line to reach out to people in distress following the success of its email service targeting at younger generation.
Its president Sim Ah Moi (pic) said callers to the non-governmental organisation were mostly those between 40 and 60 years old and hardly from teenagers despite the fact that they were the ones at higher risk of committing suicide.
Sim said high expectations from parents as well as society and transitional period from teenagers to adulthood life were among the reasons which contribute to the suicidal tendency among teenagers.
"Children are under pressure from their parents and society and they expect them to excel in everything they do and could reach a tipping point where they would rather end their own life instead of continue living under pressure,’’ she said.
Sim said the number of calls received by Befrienders Johor Baru had declined in the past three years but the trend did not translate into less people in distress.
"Probably, they are more comfortable sending text messages or e-mails instead of making calls,’’ she said adding that 10% of the calls received daily were related to suicidal intentions, family, relationship and societal problems.
