Lifeline Tasmania a Phone Call Away for Those in Distress this Christmas
Hobart, Tasmania, Australia, Dec, 2018 -- Christmas is a busy time for volunteers at Lifeline Tasmania who are expecting to receive 3000 calls from Tasmanians in distress this December.
Nationally Lifeline expect to receive over 77,000 calls, 2000 of these on Christmas Eve alone.
Lifeline Tasmania chief executive Debbie Evans said Christmas is a difficult time for those struggling from loneliness and isolation.
"Christmas is a really wonderful time for a lot of people, they get to spend it with their family and friends, but for a lot of people who are alone Christmas just highlights the things that they don’t have in their life," Ms Evans said.
Ms Evans said a major issue is when people try to create a perfect Christmas.
"If you are struggling financially, the burden of having to buy presents for your kids and for family members and create a really wonderful lunch can actually mean you stick it on a credit card and then that exacerbates through the year," she said.
"A lot of people when they have relationship breakdowns may have small children and sometimes they only see them for Christmas Eve or Christmas night and, for the first year especially, that can be very difficult for parents."
Lifeline Tasmania operates 24/7 and is run by 400 volunteers including 64 call centre crisis support volunteers across the state who will give up their time to support Tasmanians in crisis this Christmas period.
The volunteers are trained in counselling and can intervene when required through a direct line to police.
Ms Evans urged the public to reach out to those in their community who may be alone at Christmas or struggling with isolation.
