Bhopal, India, Feb 21, 2023 - In a new initiative, the city police may soon launch a single window helpline initiative for single women residing in the city and senior citizens. The initiative is a part of the renovation of the city’s ‘Women Police Station or Mahila Thana’. Once the single women residing in any part of the city including a single mother, working women or a student and the elderly citizens register themselves through the single window, designated cops from local police stations in their area would visit them from time to time at regular intervals and provide help if needed. Mahila Thana would act as nodal police station and monitor them. The facility is already available on the Citizen portal of MP Police.

The city Mahila Thana is being revamped and many new initiatives are being taken under the Bhopal Police Commissionerate. The new single window initiative for single women and senior citizens is also a part of these initiatives. Notably, a number of crimes against single women and senior citizens residing alone have been reported in the city during the recent years. Such initiatives have been taken up by police in the past too, but they became dysfunctional due to lack of monitoring.

A woman cop told TOI that the new initiative of single window helpline for single women and elderly people residing alone will soon be inaugurated in the city. The aim of the single window helpline is to make the elderly people or single women residing alone feel that they have somebody to care for them. Once the senior citizens or single women including widows, single parent, working women or a student residing alone register themselves by visiting either Mahila Thana or local police station, the designated cops of city police would often visit their homes in their jurisdiction to keep a check on their security needs. In case of senior citizens, the cops will also take care if they need any medical help or any other help. Mahila Thana would monitor the whole process, she added.

Speaking on the initiative, Puja Mishra, a Bagsewaniya-based young professional, told TOI that Bhopal has become an education hub and girl students from many parts of the state come here to study. They either reside in girls hostels or PG basis. If any such initiative is started it would be of much help. She added that she knows many senior citizens, who reside alone in many parts of the city while their children work in outstations or abroad. The initiative will provide them the much-needed help.

DCP (Headquarter) Vinit Kapoor said that the idea is at a very nascent stage and still needs brainstorming on various aspects.
