Kohima, India, July 8, 2021 -- With the aim of attending to complaints and grievances of the senior citizens, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to start a national helpline number was signed between the Nagaland State Legal Services Authority (NSLSA) and the Good Samaritan Women Society on Wednesday.

The MoU was inked at the NSLSA Member Secretary Office by Member Secretary N Longshithung Ezung and Programme Manager of the Senior Citizens Helpline, Neithonuo Liegise.

Earlier, the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment (MoSJE), National Institute of Social Defense (NISD) and Nagaland’s social welfare department decided to start a National Helpline with the Good Samaritan Women Society as the service provider.

The main objective of the helpline is to attend to the complaints and grievances of senior citizens. As per the MoU, the state Helpline will receive calls and the district/sub-district administrations will act upon the grievances received, NSLSA Public Relations Assistant informed.

The national helpline for Senior Citizens (NHSC) — Elder Line with a toll-free number at 14567 will be mandated to facilitate four different services—providing information, guidance, emotional support and field intervention. Information related to eldercare service providers, pension, government schemes, benefits and so on based on the caller’s requirements, will be provided through the helpline.

It will also guide senior citizens on legal and pension related issues.

Rescues and reunion of homeless elderly through the helpline team will facilitate the rescue of homeless senior citizens and arrange for accommodation in old age homes and facilitate the process towards reuniting the elder persons with the family and the helpline team will also assist senior citizens in getting their abuse complaint resolved through maintenance tribunal or with the help of other stakeholders.

The MoU mentioned that the rescue and reunion of homeless elderly, support for abused elderly, and legal guidance would be rendered by the Legal Service Authority.
