Wakefield, UK, April, 2021 -- If you were inspired by the call handlers on Channel 4's 999: What's Your Emergency here's the job for you.

West Yorkshire Police are recruiting staff to handle 999 emergency and 111 non-emergency calls at its contact centres in Bradford and Wakefield.

And as it's an entry-level apprenticeship you don't need any formal qualifications.

What you do need is the ability to stay calm and think logically under pressure. You'll also need to be an effective listener and quickly work out what help the caller needs.

The job advert reads: "As a contact officer for West Yorkshire Police, you will be responding to both emergency and non-emergency calls, and you will literally be making a difference to – and in some instances actually helping to save – peoples’ lives...

"You will have a critical role to play in making sure that the communities of West Yorkshire have confidence in their police service and that they are satisfied with the actions we take.

"This is not just about working in a call centre; this is about exceptional public service and teamwork to ensure the best possible outcomes for people who need our help."

It helps if you have GCSE pass grades in maths and English language but if not, you will complete a functional skills level two qualification as part of your apprenticeship.

The starter salary is £19,452 to £20,706 with 20 per cent extra for working shifts and 13.45 per cent extra for working weekends. When you're qualified you can earn up to £23,406.

The deadline for applications is April 28 at 11.55pm.
