Imphal, India, Dec 7, 2022 - Manipur Social Welfare director Ng Uttam called upon all women to understand their rights and know the 'women helpline number-181'.

Women should be aware of 'women helpline number-181', Manipur Social Welfare director Ng Uttam said on Wednesday, calling upon all women to understand their rights.

Addressing a one-day state level consultation programme on Women Helpline (181) and Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (prevention, prohibition and redressal) Act, 2013 at Hotel Imphal, Uttam said it has been nine years since the Act was implemented but the Act is probably known by just 50 per cent of people in the state.

Even educated women are not aware about the Act, he said and expressed how then will women in the unorganised sector be aware. Therefore, the department is taking the initiative of spreading awareness to supervisors to reach every corner of the state, the director added.

"Women helpline number 181, ChildLine number 1098, elder line number 14567 are numbers that provide service of help", said Uttam and added that there is another important number, i.e., 112, which is an emergency response support service for India. But there will be only one helpline number 112 and all other helplines will be deleted when the integration process is completed, he added.

The director of Social Welfare also said that children can learn of violent acts in a family and take it as normal acts. Hence, spread awareness everywhere about such acts, he added.

Social Welfare Minister Heikham Dingo called on the supervisors to support the department with sincerity. Violence or crime against women should stop or else it will impact development as well as women empowerment, he said.

Manipur State Commission for Women chairperson Salam Ulka Devi, said under the hundred days flagship programme "Mission Shakti" the helpline number was established and about 30,000 calls have come so far in the helpline. However, crime against women hasn’t stopped and there are many that are not reported too, she said.

During the technical session, deputy director (WP) of Social Welfare, Binobala Nongmeikapam spoke on sexual harassment of women at workplace (prevention, prohibition and redressal) act, 2013; manager of Women Helpline (181), Manipur, Gurumayum Ravi Sharma spoke on role of women helpline (181); Menstrual educator Suinila Joseph spoke on menstrual hygiene among women through Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP) Suvidha Sarathi Sanitary Pads.
