IOC Helpline Aids Athletes Facing Online Abuse

Tokyo, Japan, Aug, 2021 -- The International Olympic Committee is offering a helpline to support athletes subjected to online abuse.

IOC spokesperson Mark Adams told reporters on Friday that slander through social media is "not acceptable" and "has no place in sport."

Adams said the IOC supports the athletes in every way. He encouraged them to use the 24-hour helpline. It's staffed by expert counselors who can provide advice in over 70 languages.

Olympic athletes are becoming targets of online abuse regardless of nationality. Japanese table tennis player Mizutani Jun, who won gold in the mixed doubles, and surfing silver medalist Igarashi Kanoa both said they've received hateful comments on social media.
