Stafford, UK, Aug 23, 2021 -- More workers are being hired by Staffordshire Police to take emergency calls from the public.

The force currently has around 200 contact centre officers, who are responsible for answering 999 and 101 non-emergency calls, as well as operating digital and socal channels.

Staffordshire Police is looking to recruit a further 15 call handlers, with the window for applications closing last Friday.

Current call handlers say it's a role where they feel they are helping to make a difference.

Back in June, StokeonTrentLive reported how the force was taking on 12 contact centre officers in a previous recruitment drive.

Successful applicants, who will receive a starting salary of £21,876, will be helping handle the 999 emergency calls along with 'all other contacts from the public'.

A job advert states the force wants people who are able to think under pressure and be efficient in multi-tasking.

Call handlers receive a 20 per cent shift allowance and 13.97 per cent for weekend working meaning the basic annual salary is boosted.

Former special constable Dan Fletcher, has been in the Stafford-based control room, for the last three years. He said: "Having been a special Constable, I knew I wanted to work in policing and have a career where I make a difference. This job means you are able to help others and the knowledge you gain help us continue to help the front-line and our communities."

Sammi Clarke has worked in the control room for six years and wanted to be in a job where she was making a difference to people’s lives. She said: "I used to work in a call centre but decided that I wanted to do something different to what I’ve done before, and actually help people and make a difference when they need it.

"You never know what you’ll be dealing with each day but knowing that you’re there for someone, supporting them when they need it and offering them reassurance is so rewarding."
