Buying Technology – What’s The Lifetime?

When you are sitting in front of a demo of a product that will save you time, money, improve performance etc and you like what you see and hear, just remember to do a full check on the product you are buying – what is the likely lifetime of the product i.e. if it’s software how long will it be before a newer version comes out and what is the likely cost of upgrading. If it’s hardware, when is the next planned version likely to be available. As a very simple example, I purchased a tablet and was disappointed to find the newer, expandable version available just one week later so I was disappointed that I did not do any more research. Chances are if you are investing in software or hardware you are paying thousand, maybe tens of thousands more and you don’t want to buy the new technology just when it’s getting replaced!
