Article : How To Sell On The Phone

I have observed several call center people on the phone who were selling very well. Each of them have special skills to convince people on the phone. In general when you observe in details, and spend time with them, you will recognize that, they have similar skills for selling.

Selling is a combination of mathematics, where your activity turns to sales. You can easily compare activity with performance. To reach a decision maker you have to make at least three calls. To get a real order you have to make three calls at least. So it works like this: every 9 calls brings one order. So you should make 45 calls to get 5 orders. This calculation changes when the customer call in. Then you can get one order for three calls.

Selling is self motivation and listening more carefully and responsively. Listen and acknowledge what you hear, even if you don’t agree with it, before expressing your experience or point of view. In order to get more of your conversation partner’s attention in tense situations, pay attention and: listen and give a brief restatement of what you have heard (especially feelings) before you express your own needs or position. The kind of listening recommended here separates acknowledging from approving or agreeing.

Acknowledging another person’s thoughts and feelings does not have to mean that you approve of or agree with that person’s actions or way of experiencing, or that you will do whatever someone asks. In order to coordinate our life and work with the lives and work of other people, we all need to know more of what other people are feeling and thinking, wanting and planning. But our usual "yes/no" questions actually tend to shut people up rather than opening them up. In order to encourage your conversation partners to share more of their thoughts and feelings, ask "open-ended" rather than "yes/no" questions.

To build more satisfying relationships with the people around you, express more appreciation, delight, affirmation, encouragement and gratitude. Because life continually requires us to attend to problems and breakdowns, it gets very easy to see in life only what is broken and needs fixing. But satisfying relationships (and a happy life) require us to notice and respond to what is delightful, excellent, and enjoyable, to work well done, to food well cooked, etc. It is appreciation that makes a relationship strong enough to accommodate differences and disagreements. Thinkers and researchers in several different fields have reached similar conclusions about this: healthy relationships need a core of mutual appreciation.

1.  They prepare themselves before calling.

2.  Their voice shows confidence

3.  They act as they know eveything about what they are selling

4.  They ask prepared questions to their customers. They prepare many questions, such as:

  • Fact finding questions (Open ended questions)
  • Driving questions ( where they mention about the requirements)
  • Questions which answered as " yes" mostly

5.  They listen very carefully, and show that they are listening.

6.  They give feedback

7.  They take notes when the customer speaks and they show that they take notes.

8.  They want to sell and make money, but money is not the only motivator.

9.  Voice tone is showing their body languages

10. They are cool for asking closing questions. They tell that they are helping their customers to accomplish their goals. So they show them that they are not selling, the customer should buy this only.

11.They know that selling is not finished when they get the order, they let the customer know that they made a good decision. The key is to say "well you made good choice" or "you have selected the most suitable option"

12. They are not loosing their motivation when they can not close the sale. They know they have only 1/4 of chance to sell. They still stay sincere when they can not close the sales and they expect to call later to find right time to sell.
