A report by Statista states that by 2019, the number of smartphone users in the world will cross a whopping 5 billion mark. Five billion- that’s like a good 3/4th of the current world population (7.6 billion). This means that by 2019, we can expect more than half of them dumping their old (and outdated) telecom devices (either personal or office equipment) for something new and smashing!
Okay, this also means that by 2019, we’ll have tonnes of e-waste conveniently tagging along with us. According to 2016 global e-waste report, that specific year, every single inhabitant contributed a surprising 6.1 kilogram to the global dumpage of 44.7 million metric tonnes.
The numbers mentioned above are both astonishing and alarming.
Honestly, smartphones, or any latest gadget for that matter, has become more of necessity than a leisure item in today’s world. Who needs a camera, a typewriter and a file organizer when you can get the latest computer with all those features? Even on the business aspect, new and handy technology has proven its importance. Got a moving business? You need devices that are portable enough to not to pose as an added baggage. Migrating to a newer technology is easier than ever if you just want to revamp your old devices.
But, this raises a question. What if your old devices, especially excess telecom equipment, are too gone to even take a new avatar? What should you do? Throw them away? Please don’t. Your old business phone and IT equipment still holds value. In fact, if you chose to come on this page then your conscious might have skipped this option altogether. After all, no one wants to be held responsible for adding to any of environmental distress. Especially if a huge fine is involved (thank you, government policies!).
Here’s where the THREE R’s come into play.
There is a lot more to ‘Reduce, Reuse and Recycle’ than what we’ve mugged up in the middle school. Read on to know more!!
Three R’s: Reduce, Reuse & Recycle
Waste management. A buzzword that has taken the ‘woke’ population by storm. Every responsible individual has taken to themselves to keep their surroundings clean. We see socialists getting together to organize ‘green movements’ across the globe, even government is coming up with different solutions (like color codes for garbage management) to raise awareness amongst masses. All in all, the war cry is for a sustainable life ahead (which looks pretty bleak if we consider all the data we came across earlier).
The concept of the three R’s is pretty simple; we reduce what we purchase, reuse them accordingly and send them across for responsible recycling if it’s gone enough for further use. It’s like a chain- if there is less to reuse or recycle, then we’ll held responsible for less e-waste.
Let’s break them off with examples:
Reduce: As we saw earlier, we can always buy environment-friendly electronics that serve us different functions. Like a computer, or a smartphone. In fact, nowadays, we have devices that are 2-in-1 or even 10-in-1, saving us a LOT of money.
Rather than looking for a set of different computers that would run different software, we can always opt for cloud technology which is both affordable and feasible. Not to forget the amount of space and time saved installing those dozens of devices. An additional benefit that comes with migrating to cloud computing is that it doesn’t manual updation; your provider will take care of all the software upgrades.
Reuse: Now, the ‘reuse’ here doesn’t necessarily mean YOU reusing them. Of course, you can reuse them, if the device in hand is still useful for your company. But, if it’s not, worry not. Let’s say a telephone equipment (or dozens of it) that has been left in the dungeons because your company experienced an acquisition/downsizing. The best advice here would be- go ahead and sell it! Like, donation was also an option, but selling is more feasible if you are running on a shoestring budget.
So, where can you sell your used telecom equipment? Trust me, there are thousands of recognized companies that we’ll be interested in buying your equipment, that too at a market rate. See, selling them is no trouble.
But, if you are still vouching for donating your equipment, donate them to social centers that are government-run, so your selfless act won’t fall prey to an illegal trade.
Recycling: Okay, so you have tried getting your old and used equipment out for sale/donate, but no one is willing to buy it. Or your equipment just doesn’t work anymore, so selling them is pretty useless. What should you do now? Again, throwing them away is NOT an option because even like this your equipment is USEFUL. How? Send them for recycling and you’ll know.
Please remember, just dumping them in a recycling center is not enough. Search for an ITAD center that offers safe recycling.
Why is safe recycling important? This is cause e-waste, even when called a ‘waste’, is precious. Every equipment is manufactured with dozens of valuable materials which when incinerated, without care, can go to waste. Similarly, improper disposal of e-waste can activate a plethora of toxic substances present, potentially harming the environment (and any human being living in the periphery).
So, the moral of the story is to be a responsible citizen (or a company) and go for the three Rs rather than just disposing of your old and excess equipment. Reduce your purchases, reuse or let others reuse them and recycle if your equipment can’t be reused anymore. Contribute to a healthier planet!
