Weil, Gotshal & Manges is a company working in international legal services across the US, Europe and Asia. International expansion over the past decade has resulted in a significant number of the firm’s 1,200 lawyers now being based in Europe. The firm’s five primary departments - Corporate, Litigation /Regulatory, Business Finance & Restructuring, Tax and Trusts & Estates - provide healthy diversification in all economic cycles.
The Challenge
With the international expansion in Europe the London office needed a voice solution that would offer excellent client service and be an effective tool for the partners and employees. They were using an existing legacy Octel system that was no longer suitable for their growing requirements. Weil, Gotshal & Manges wanted to move to an open standards platform that would allow, easy to manage, upgrade options should they wish to utilise more communication and full unified messaging features in the future. A system was required that provided excellent functionality but did not require extensive maintenance, was easy to administer and would integrate simply with their existing set up.
Weil, Gotshal & Manges appreciate that it is important to provide clients and employees with an efficient and effective communication gateway that enhances the firm’s identity and provides a good service. There was therefore a requirement to install a solution that met all their requirements.
As an international law firm there was a preference for all offices and users to utilise the same technology.
The Solution
As CallXpress was successfully installed and operating well in the New York office it was decided that this should be the corporate messaging solution, it met all the requirements and the London team had the extra confidence of knowing the product was successful in New York.
The CallXpress solution is developed by AVST, a developer of unified communications solutions, and was implemented by one of its UK based partners, Voice Products.
Weil, Gotshal & Manges discussed CallXpress with Voice Products, who provide voice and communication technology to the UK market. Voice Products are respected in this market place and fully endorsed the choice of AVST’s CallXpress to meet the requirements of this law firm.
The integration, administration and maintenance requirements set by the firm to proceed with the implementation were all met by the CallXpress system. CallXpress is PBX independent, integrating with over 250 traditional and IP phone systems so integration is never an issue and support is minimal. CallXpress also provides improved system administration through an easy to use Windows® application, available across a LAN or WAN environment.
Weil, Gotshal & Manges wanted to deal with a UK based company who they were confident could provide them with the security of knowing that they would be supported by a dedicated and knowledgeable team. Voice Products fitted the bill.
The Result

The CallXpress system offers Advanced Messaging at this stage but provides the ability to upgrade to full Unified Messaging at some point in the future, so it is viewed as a sound investment. It is used in a traditional voicemail manner. As a communication tool it enables London and New York to communicate 24 hours a day, it also meets the Voicemail requirements of visiting staff from the New York office.
One key benefit to Weil, Gotshal & Manges is the CallXpress functionality with Blackberry devices, as it provides an excellent mobile communication tool. The majority of the lawyers and employees are provided with Blackberry PDAs and use them extensively. Now with CallXpress they can retrieve email and also be informed of voice messages regardless of their location, most of the staff at Weil, Gotshal & Manges make extensive use of SMTP notification of messages and find this facility very useful as it improves productivity and speed of communication when out of the office.

Jo continues,“From an administrator’s point of view the system is much easier to maintain, it is very quick and simple to add new names as well as moves and changes for CallXpress from one central point. I find the reporting tool to be invaluable. It is also very comforting to know that we have the ability to expand the system as our requirements develop.”
