News : Project Aims to Tackle Isolation
June 27, 2014 -- CarelineUK, a provider of telecare monitoring services, has won a grant and will lead a consortium to combat elderly isolation in the South West.
The 'Community Channel, South West' project, run with Dorset County Council, Bournemouth Housing Society for the Elderly (BHSE) and production company RPPtv was chosen as one of four regional pilot projects being part-funded by UK innovation foundation Nesta and the Technology Strategy Board.
The pilot project was chosen as part of the ‘Destination Local Demonstrators’ competition, which invited companies and organisations to submit proposals using technology to provide digital news and content services to enable people to connect more easily with their local communities.
CarelineUK and its partners, including Bournemouth University Media School, will use existing community services and state-of-the-art ICT systems to host a media channel and new social network to provide local news and information helping vulnerable and lonely people connect with their local community and services.
The project will be piloted next year, delivered through social housing services in Dorset and the South West.
Pending the results of the pilot, the programme will be rolled-out across the UK.
Andrew Gardner, managing director of CarelineUK, said: "We are very excited to be leading the "Community Channel, South West" project and look forward to working with our partner organisations in tackling social isolation. The competition funding and our own investment will ensure we can apply our experience in using technology-based solutions to make a real difference for vulnerable people, giving them more independence and support."
