Cape Town, South Africa, Aug, 2017 -- 10111 call centre operators will again hang up their headsets, as the strike for higher salaries resumes with immediate effect, the South African Policing Union (SAPU) has announced.
SAPU general secretary Oscar Skommere said it had been fighting a losing battle with police management since it temporarily suspended the strike almost three weeks ago.
"We hoped that CCMA intervention would give us a good outcome, but we were not getting what we thought we would. The response from SAPS was not positive," he said on Thursday.
The union was still calling for the operators' salary levels to be increased by two notches, an estimated increase of R50 000 per annum.
An estimated 5 000 operators, represented by SAPU, embarked on the strike last month, forcing the SAPS to deploy police officers to the 10111 call centre.
Operators are employed under the Public Service Act and are, therefore, not considered an essential service.
Four days after embarking on the action, SAPU decided to temporarily suspend it to allow for CCMA negotiations to continue without any pressure, and "for the benefit of the public we serve".
