News : 104 Counselling Helpline in Tamil Nadu Gets Get Influx of Calls
Chennai, India, Jan 19, 2016 -- With teachers racing to finish the portions and children still trying to overcome the trauma of the recent flood, '104' counselling helpline in Tamil Nadu has seen a surge in calls in the last 10 days since a campaign for students was launched on January 7. The helpline received 1,918 calls till January 17.
"Most of the callers were students from Class 10 and Class 12 seeking psychological and physiological help from our counsellors," said B Prabhudoss, regional manager of GVK-EMRI that supports the helpline along with the state government.
He said counsellors noticed higher stress levels among students this year compared to previous years.
"This could be because of a combination of factors, including teachers being stressed and other districts having a possible edge over rain-affected districts. Everyone is chasing time and some students are finding it hard to cope," he said.
Most of the queries were related to information on healthy food, ways to improve concentration, means to overcome fear of exams and activities that help distress. At least 70% of the callers were male students.
