News : 104 Helpline Fixes Marital Rows
Chennai, May 26, 2014 -- After living a unhappy life for five years since marriage, Raghu* (30) of Chennai finally found a solution to the lack of attention he had been receiving from his wife. And it was only by chance that he made an attempt in getting his wife, who could not forget her former lover and lead a peaceful married life, counselled through the ‘104’ helpline.
The helpline, a project launched by the State government in the end of December 2013 and operated by GVK EMRI, has gone far beyond offering just health services across the State to counselling and resolving family issues. In the past four months, they have resolved issues in at least 20 different families in the State. The counsellors manning the line said they were receiving on an average about 10 calls a day pertaining to issues between married couples. Though it might be a miniscule 30 per cent of the total counselling calls they get, they are seeing a surge.
"Majority of the calls are about one of them having an extra-marital affair. We do get calls on issues of intimacy between couples, lack of understanding and other minor issues," a counsellor said.
Overall, it receives on an average 1,200 calls out of which only 200 to 240 calls are effective ones while the rest are those made by curious people, who simply wanted to check if the helpline actually works.
‘104’ health helpline basically functions on three main components - providing health information, counselling and suggestions.
