News : 33% Surge in Complaints on Women's Helpline
Agra, India, Feb 2, 2016 -- The women's helpline in Uttar Pradesh, regulated by the state police, reported a 33% surge in the number of harassment complaints in January this year, compared to January 2015.
According to data shared by head of UP helpline number, inspector general Navneet Sakera, "A total 15,802 harassment cases were lodged by women helpline last month, which is 3,929 more than that of January last year when 11,873 cases were filed."
Speaking to TOI, Sakera, said, "In every three minutes, one complaint was registered by the UP women powerline, which is an unparalleled service in the entire country." "The most number of complaints were received between 4 pm and 8 pm, sometimes extending up to 9 pm. There were hardly any call after 11 pm," he added.
Last month, officer in charge of the women powerline was removed by the state government after he was accused of harassing a law student. In another case, a second year BDS student who was harassed by a youth committed suicide after she failed to reach the powerline for help due to heavy call traffic rush.
Since the introduction of the helpline, police have lodged 4,77,589 cases of harassment in the past three years and have resolved 4,67,326 cases. A total 10,263 cases are pending so far.
The most number of complaints were reported from Lucknow, followed by Kanpur Nagar, Allahabad, Varanasi, Agra, Sitapur and Meerut.
