News : 82 Chinese Arrested in Turkey Over Telephone Fraud
Izmir, Turkey, June 1, 2016 -- The Chinese embassy in Turkey has confirmed that 82 Chinese nationals were arrested in the country on Tuesday on suspicion of phone fraud.
The gang, including 52 Taiwanese and 30 mainland Chinese, was detained in Izmir province in western Turkey.
The gang copied the bank card information of 3,000 Chinese tourists and set up a call centre for telecom fraud, CNR.CN reported, citing Turkish media.
Turkish police found a large number of cell phones and laptops at the call centre, Taiwan media reported, quoting Turkish media Anadolu Ajansi.
Taiwan’s foreign affairs department said it would try to get the Taiwanese suspects deported to Taiwan.
The case comes after 45 Taiwanese and 32 mainland Chinese wire fraud suspects were deported from Kenya to China in April.
Taiwanese news site The News Lens reports that investigations have revealed that more than 6,000 Taiwanese are believed to have committed fraud around the world.
