News : Ahead of Diwali, Amritsar MC Launches Garbage Helpline
Amritsar, India, Nov 3, 2015 -- With Diwali around the corner and the lack of seriousness of the officials and the public alike towards the Swacch Bharat Abhiyan, the desperation of the civic officials to get rid of the city’s wastes lining the roads and various colonies has ‘compelled’ them to launch a toll-free garbage helpline 18001802103.
Named ‘Debris call system’, the helpline received more than 100 calls on the inaugural day itself. Considering the past record of the MC officials of ignoring the complaints received on its other helplines, it is yet to be seen how many of these would actually be redressed.
In January, Amritsar, along with 75 other cities would be re-assessed for its grading under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan.
In the race for Smart City tag, the Amritsar municipal corporation has finally remembered that garbage was the biggest issue confronting the holy city at the moment. In its Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats (SWOT) analysis, the civic body had cited traffic and poor revenue collection as the biggest threats to the development of Amritsar.
The city has been divided into five zones and chief sanitary inspectors have been entrusted the responsibility of ensuring sanitation of the city, while health officer Dr Raju Chauhan has been appointed as the over all in-charge. The MC authorities have barred its officials from taking leave till Diwali. Special instructions have been issued to the sanitary staff to sport uniforms on Diwali night, considering the fact that lakhs of devotees would be in the city at the time.
"An employee posted at the helpline would take the call and contact the officer concerned. Thereafter, the process of dealing with the complaint would begin," said municipal commissioner Pradeep Sabharwal. He added that as Diwali was drawing near, special instructions have been issued to spruce up the city.
This would include washing and painting the roundabouts and statues in the city’s squares. He added that cases would be registered against those who litter the roads repeatedly. Sabharwal said with a view to ensuring proper lifting of garbage in the Diwali season, the MC had ordered 25 additional tractor trolleys.

However, as far as the issue of dumping garbage and the proposal to erect a solid waste treatment plant (SWTP) at the Bhagtanwala dump was concerned, the MC could have a run-in with the residents of Bhagtanwala area.
The members of Saanjhi Sangharsh Committee comprising Bhagtanwala residents, led by Manpreet Singh Badal, leader of People’s Party of Punjab (PPP), met Punjab governor Kaptan Singh Solanki and handed him a memorandum in which they have urged him to summon the Punjab government on the issue of the dump and get the proposed solid waste treatment plant shifted to the outskirts of the city.
