News : Alleged South Korean ‘Call Centre' Scammers Busted
Bangkok, Thailand, June 9, 2015 -- Seven South Korean men were arrested in Bangkok for allegedly running a Thailand-based "call centre" scam to dupe their compatriots over a one-month period.
At a press conference yesterday, police presented the suspects, aged 23-30, along with seven computer notebooks, 15 desk phones, 10 cell phones, an Internet extender, five routers, two Internet phone adapters, two one-time password devices, seven passports and 12 pages of related document in Korean.
The suspects were rounded up recently at a condominium in Soi Sukhumvit 24 in Klong Toei district.
One suspect claimed to have been allegedly hired by an elusive South Korean man, Jong Ji-Tek, who gave them a list of South Korean names so the people could be conned into applying for bogus low-interest loans, police said.
The information was allegedly passed onto Jong and the victims' Internet banking accounts were hacked, police said.
Police said each person involved in the scam was paid at about Bt90,000 per month plus 5-10 per cent commission from every person they duped.
The suspects were initially charged with working without permit and their information will be passed on to South Korean Embassy so the damage could be assessed and public fraud charges could be laid, police said.
