News : Allegheny County 911 Call Center Infested with Bedbugs
Allegheny County, PA, USA, Aug 14, 2015 -- Allegheny County officials said bed bugs were found today inside the county's Emergency Services 911 Emergency Call Center.
The health department today confirmed the discovery of the insects at the Point Breeze facility, and building management has contacted a pest control contractor, the county said in a press release.
"Recently, Pennsylvania and other states have seen an increased number of bed bug infestations plaguing residents," Alvin Henderson, the county's emergency services director, said in the release. "As bed bugs infest more and more homes, they are also being carried into schools and the workplace. This is what has happened within our 911 Emergency Call Center."
A more "comprehensive plan of action" is pending information from the pest control contractor.
Health department director Karen Hacker said the tiny insects that feed on human blood do not carry diseases, but can cause itchiness, anxiety and sleeplessness. They can also "hitchhike" in items included backpacks, clothing, luggage and books.
