The management of 108 ambulance service in Trichy said that usually one-third of the total cases attended by their service was accidents. "We attend to 10 to 15 cases of road traffic accidents in the district every day. But the number was 39 yesterday. The increase was due to the revelry," said programme manager of GVK-EMRI, R Kannan.
According to the management of the ambulance service, drunken driving was not the only reason for all the accidents as violation of road traffic rules too accounted for some. Compared to the accidents last year, vehicles were redirected to accident-prone areas such as Samayapuram , TVS toll gate, Palpannai, Amma Mandapam and Mukkombu areas on Wednesday.
Trichy has 30 ambulances including two bike ambulances and two neo-natal ambulances all of which were put to use on Wednesday. The bike ambulances were pressed into service to give first aid to the victims in the areas where the four-wheeler ambulances could not reach easily. In all, the ambulance service attended to patients in 124 incidents including many cases of fever.
