Mumbai, India, Dec, 2021 -- In yet another attempt to ensure women's safety, all police stations in Maharashtra capital Mumbai have been allotted separate mobile numbers to file complaints of women harassment.
The move is aimed at improving police response time in cases of crimes against women and giving priority to their cases. These mobile numbers will be in addition to already existing police helpline numbers.
The mobile numbers are introduced as part of Nirbhaya initiative after the Saki Naka rape and murder case in September, according to a report in Indian Express.
"Every police station now has its own mobile number specifically for women to approach police if they face any harassment. It has been a week since the initiative began and we are publicising the numbers," the report quoted Vishwas Nangre-Patil, Joint Commissioner of Police (law and order), as saying.
According to an official, 100 mobile phones have been provided to Mumbai Police by Reliance Industries. These phones will be free for three years. Officials said police are expected to publicise numbers by putting them at schools, colleges, police stations and Nirbhaya vans.
Police will also create a WhatsApp group and connect major societies. In case of any crime against women, the victim could drop a message on the group to alert the police. The official Facebook pages of police stations are also asked to display the numbers.
