Darlington, England, May 7, 2015 -- A takeover of a North-East employer has moved closer.
BT says shareholders have backed its approach to buy mobile phone operator EE.
The deal, subject to regulatory approval, will give it an 8,800-strong workforce and extended scope to offer fixed-lines phones, mobiles and TV.
It will also gain EE’s 4G network, which provides users with instant internet access.
Olaf Swantee, EE’s chief executive, previously said the deal could be passed by the completion authorities at the end of the year, and Gavin Patterson, BT chief executive, today (Thursday, May 7) said its absorption will deliver significant benefits.

EE previously told The Northern Echo no jobs will be immediately affected in the deal, with bosses expecting it to continue in its current guise throughout 2015 as the agreement is finalised.
However, BT said it was too early to confirm what, if any, changes to North-East jobs would be made.
